Hi, I'm new to this forum and Commander ownership in general....
I wanted to share this with you all.

I recently purchased my 06 Commander and 2 of the 3 bulbs in the Heater control unit were out so I searched for a suitable substitute and this is what I found and used.

So far so good....

I purchased the lamps at Radio Shack. They were in the LAMP drawers and not the LED drawers as the LED's were rated 3.6v and produce a cool bluish white light. (I also purchased a few of them)

The bulbs are part #272-1154
12v 50mA
Bi-Pin Lamp
Cost - $1.69 each

The lamps are slightly smaller but just as bright and unlike an LED the light is emitted all around rather than directional

Just unsolder the existing lamps from the circuit board, bend/trim the pins on new lamp into shape with small needle nose pliers and solder in place.

DONE! Works like a charm and can be done quickly!

Quick question... mine went out as well and I went to look into it, but I couldn't get the cover off the back around the fan speed knob. What did ya remove from there to get to the circuitry?

Voodoo- The blue cover stays on. You have to take the whole back cover off. There are 3 clips on top side and 3 on the bottom. Push a flat head screwdriver in each one and work it free. The whole circuit board will then come free.

I may show pics later if needed

I tore into mine... I see what you mean. I, however, didn't realize that my wife "pushed" the blower knob in about a good 1/4 inch. Thats where it was snagging.

Did you just pull the bulb out or did ya unsolder the housing that holds them? (I took pics of mine... I can PM them to ya)

Remove the bulb and the plastic housing it is in (discard both), resolder the new bulb in it's place. The polarity doesn't seem to matter either with the new bulb.

You can pm me if you'd like

Sorry I haven't had the time to tear mine back apart to take pictures.

I think I am going to give this a shot this weekend. I assume I will need to change out all of the lights in the control panel for it to look right?

FYI, you need a small tip on your iron to get the originals off the board, they are surface mount. (not pinned thru circuit board)

Not sure of the correct way, but I started with the shifter trim ring, and worked my way up to the radio, then kinda worked it all loose.

Once the unit is out there are tabs that hold the back cover on.

I am just starting this project...
Can you go into more detail about getting the unit out?

Do I just pull up the Chrome Ring around the gear shift knob housing? (I tried pulling on the chrome ring, and I didnt want to break it) Then does the rest just pop put?

Thanks for your help

The chrome ring just pops up rather easily, work it loose all around with a flat head, then the rest of the black part around the chrome ring will pry loose as well. You just have to dig in really. Kinda like a puzzle you will figure it out.
