Any one have any experience taking out the drivers side half shaft from the front differential:icon_confused:? I am unable to get it to come out:cursin:, and looking for suggestions, sooner than later as I need to have it done tomorrow.

Some have a ring in a groove that retains the axle in the splines. You just have to pull hard to get past the ring, its in a groove. Kind of like the retaining ball on a ratchet & socket.

Let me know how this turns out as I need to do the same thing but the "snap ring" that goes on it makes me think you have to get in the diff to get it out.

Motorcity - Are you saying to just pull on it hard and it will come out?

I noticed the snap ring in the groove, and I've pulled hard enough to completely stretch the inner boot out (it's also the side that tossed all the grease out and might have come apart inside). I've used 2 pry bars at once and still can't get it to budge--I'm not afraid of opening the diff but would prefer not to if it will come out otherwise.

maybe I'll wrap a chain around it and tie it to my little mazda truck. . .

HALF SHAFT

Check inboard and outboard C/V joint for leaking grease. This is a sign of boot or boot clamp damage.

NOISE/VIBRATION IN TURNS

A clicking noise or vibration in turns could be caused by a damaged outer C/V or inner tripod joint seal boot or seal boot clamps. This will result in the loss/contamination of the joint grease, resulting in inadequate lubrication of the joint. Noise could also be caused by another component of the vehicle coming in contact with the half shafts.

CLUNKING NOISE DURING ACCELERATION

This noise may be a damaged or worn C/V joint. A torn boot or loose/missing clamp on the inner/outer joint which has allowed the grease to be lost will damage the C/V joint.

SHUDDER/VIBRATION DURING ACCELERATION

This could be a worn/damaged inner tripod joint or a sticking tripod joint. Improper wheel alignment may also cause a shudder or vibration.

VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS

This problem could be a result of out of balance front tires or tire/wheel runout. Foreign material (mud, etc.) packed on the backside of the wheel(s) will also cause a vibration.

Went thru this when I installed my QDII diffs.
It takes patience, and maybe 2 people. 1 to pull straight out on the axle and 1 to use a pry bar to wiggle the shaft out of the diff housing.
I've seen pictures of a prybar with a forked end that would seem to be ideal for this, but have not been able to find one.
I just had to play with mine for over an hour on each side to get them out.

I have done this on many different makes of cars. I was an auto mechanic for ten years and an automotive instructor at a local community college for 3 years. Place your prybar between the diff and the half shaft and pop the half shaft out. It has to be done in a short, quick pop to get it out. You should be able to pull out the shaft easily by hand the rest of the way.

I never was able to get it out--it would seem, after opening the diff up, that the snap ring on the end of the shaft has become wedged or will not compress to release the shaft from the differential. I ended up disassembling the shaft and replacing the boot, since that was all that had gone bad (no noises from it, just throwing grease out and wasn't dry).

I was expecting it to come out easily as well, as I have taken several cv's out of various vehicles. But Murphy's law seemed to have it out for me this weekend. Also, you can find a 1/2" drive 14mm hex key at CarQuest--but it's to long for a socket wrench, I ended up using a 14mm wrench to turn the drain plug.


I tried all of the above methods and was unable to remove it from the differential. I'll probably end up having to take out the diff someday and seeing what I can do to remove the half shaft with the differential out of the vehicle.

Everything else was cake to take care of, just had the one issue.
