Can you guys please tell me the easiest way to get the oil fiter off the HEMI engine ? From what I can see there really is not an easy way. The engineer that put it in that location should be hanged. I tried to get a strap wrench in there but couldn't make it work.

Agreed! I've found that an end-cap type filter wrench on a ratchet with extention works the best. Watch your knuckles!

What size cap wrench do I need ?

Don't know. Depends upon the filter you have on it now and the model to fit it. When I bought mine, I matched the cap to the replacement filter.

There are different "scalloped" patterns on different brands.

well when i changed mine the first time, i removed the bracket that catches/directs the oil from the filter and used a strap wrench. I did put it back on right after I loosened it enough to get off. I agree that whoever designed this should be hanged...or at least slapped upside the head several times. Good Luck!

I've used either the Fram PH16 or the OEM Mopar filters depending on which I can get cheaper. An oil filter "C" cap wrench fits both filters, though with the Fram 'grip' filters, I have not needed a wrench to take it off. A 3/8" wratchet with a 2" extension fits it all nicely without removing the plastic drain chute.

I forgot to mention in '08 the oil filter went to metric threading. Fram's number for the '08+ 5.7 is a PH2 and it still uses the "C" cap wrench.

I just changed mine -- '09 5.7 .........

Napa Gold oil filter -- Part number .. 7899

This is a direct replacement for the OEM oil filter. Same end cap - So one can go to Napa for the wrench and filter.

I had no problem in changing - Using a medium and short length 3/8" extention.

One of the power steering hoses is just below the plastic drain lip -- I simply pushed on the hose backward to the front cross member to keep dry - Simple process.

how to remove tight oil filter on 2006 hemi

Jeep dealer closed this week...I decided to do the oil change myself for the 1st time...Finally found the oil filter and used every oil filter removal strap/tool I have in my arsenel...No luck....either no room to get leverage or the straps etc wouldn't go on due to lack of room....Sure would appreciate any tips or suggestions....even used the cap with the socket fitting but the cap kept slipping off under leverage....thanks RKL

Use a large arc joint/adjustable pliers to give it a starting twist then spin off by hand.

I've removed spin-on oil filters from hundereds of vehicles equipment and pumps ... never ONCE has the "drive-a-screwdriver-through-the-filter" method failed me.

You got to have guts though because once you penetrate the sheet metal the trucks not moving till you finish. :)

There's actualy back up trick .. if you end up destrying the sheet metal .. the base plate is exposed and it has holes in it you can use a pin wrench (or home made equivilent) in to get it off

As soon as I read the title I thought the "screwdriver through the filter" method. Just remeber to coat the rubber seal on the filter with fresh oil so it doesn't dry lock again.

Hemi: What oil filter wrench?

I need to get an oil filter wrench as I'm going to do my oil changes myself from now on..

What wrench are you hemi guys using?

I personally never use them no matter what engine it is. Hand tight then a quarter turn has never failed.

If you are going to use one, they make adjustable ones but I don't recommend those because they can slip around the outside of the filter. Measure around the filter then divide by 3.14 and you'll know what size wrench to get.

I use the end cap style filter wrench with a 3/8 ratchet and a 6" ext. it as easy as it gets. Just did mine yesterday. It was messy, as it was my first with the Superlift and I had to drain it onto the skid and then out. However, I installed my Fumoto drain plug and can't wait to see how easy of an oilchange my next one is. I use Mobile 1 oil filter #M210. Just find a cap that fits it, and you're in business. I can't imagine trying to get a strap style wrench on it, that would be a pain. This way is painless.

No filter should be that tight! I think dealers and oil change shops use a wrench to tighten them to prevent lawsuits from filters falling off. I just apply oil to seal then hand snug and then 1/4-1/2 turn crank by hand and have never lost one or had a leak.
