Hi guys!

New to the forum and to the Commander thing. Years back i owned a WJ and have good memories of it so now it was time to switch back to a Jeep. This time 06 Limited Commander with a Merc 3.0 v6 diesel and Quadra-Drive2. Great ride!

But now i'm chasing down a clicking/knocking sound coming from the front. Driving slowly stright line i can hear it to the cabin. Its not loud and turning up the volume would fix it :smile2: but i know it's there and its driving me nuts.

But firstly i have a question about QD2 system and front differential. Yesterday i jacked up front end one wheel at the time and tried to turn the wheel by hand and both of them were quite stiff and i had to use a bit force to rotate the wheel. Its not the brakes but has something to do with differencial or trasfer case. I didnt hear any grinding or binding noises. Is it normal for a QD2 system or should the wheels spin without effort in case one wheel is up and opposite down?

Post some pics of your Commander when you can;

I can't really give you what I think is a good answer about your QD-II system; I have QT-II which uses the same transfer case as yours, but, I don't have the electronic limited slip differentials that you have - and I'm not sure how that factors into the question you asked; But I'm sure someone will chime in here that knows more about it than I do;

there will be some resistance; it will not be like spinning a bicycle wheel.


there is a solenoid in the diff that controls the locking feature. sometimes it will get stuck and you will not be able to turn one wheel up with the other down (always locked) you would also feel driveline binding when making sharp turns...

Thanks for the replys.

I now have question about rear driveshaft. There is no actual play or slack in u joints but when ja loosened differential side joint it feels dry and has like a dead spot in the centre. Its hard to explain so hope you understand :smile2: Probably would be a good idea to replace the driveshaft?

Still no good pictures of my Commander. Need a wash and waxing before a photoshoot.

Still trying to find source of clicking/knocking sound from drivetrain... No succsess so far. It's even worse then before and yesterday when i was cruising about 40mph car started to shake and vibrate. Also felt and heard grinding/binding noise just like wheel nuts were loose. Stopped the car immediately but all seamed ok and after the stop vibration was gone. Only knocking.

Replaced drive shaft differential side cv joint but no luck. Today spent 8hours removing and cheking front differential - no problems there.

front cv shafts look and felt ok too, so i'm out of ideas for now.

@Samruk; If it was me, I would start by having an alignment and wheel balancing done (have your rotors & calipers inspected too) to eliminate that from the equation and then proceed from there.

Are any DTC's being generated in the EVIC?

Had a similar problem with my 2006, 4.7. Sounds simple but it turned out to be the emergency brake assembly on right rear was broken at the wheel, and dragging on rotor. Temporarily removed the assembly, of course no emergency brake now.

Perhaps the bearings in the wheel hub are bad? I think I might have a similar issue with mine. Replaced the front left, and the vibration/grinding I felt went down quite a bit. I think I may have to do the other side now too.

After all it was the front differential! Took the Jeep to a local service (American Beauty) who are specialized USA cars. The mechanic used a stetoscope and confirmed it was the front differential thats gone bad. The price they asked for the repair was quite high so instead i went for a junkyard unit. Repleaced the differential yesterday and all quiet and smooth now! Before replacement added some polyurethane sealant to the upper bushings also. Hope they last longer now!
