Re: Mods 2 Go

Got some part #'s and prices for the two remote steering wheel radio switches and the harness.

right switch 4685728AB $20.45 CDN
left switch 4685729AB $23.85 CDN
Switch harness 52029319AA $12.70 CDN

I didn't price the steering wheel backing with the holes for the switches, couldn't find a part #. A dremel should do.

As far as the clockspring goes there's only one part # but there's no guarantees there will be a wire for it on the column.

other parts

instrument panel/radio bezel 5JT12XDVAF (dark gray) $134 CDN

Here's pics of the base bezel radio surround, yellow arrows show plastic welds. A nice stainless or carbon fiber replacement would go nice here.

multifunction switch with auto headlight position 5143313AD $73.35 CDN
possible future mod but would also need sunsensor

out of curiosity I priced a garage door opener 56054008AC $315 CDN

These are all list prices.

Re: Mods 2 Go

Well, good news :D The steering wheel radio switches are in and it's Plug & Play. The clockspring has an extra connector for the switch harness so it was basically cut out 2 holes and plug everything in. Works fine with the base radio.
I wanted to do the NAV install at the same time but it was just too cold in the Commander. I'll post some pics and a little how-to as soon as I find a place to host the pics.

Re: Mods 2 Go

Basically you want to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and wait 2-3 minutes for the airbag system capacitors to discharge.

At the back of the steering wheel there are two holes with 10 mm bolts that hold the airbag in place. You'll have to turn the wheel so the hole is at the bottom to give you more room to remove it.

With the bolts removed return the steering wheel to it straight forward position and pull the airbag away from the steering wheel far enough to disconnect the two connectors on the back of the airbag by pinching the sides. Then disconnect the white connector from the clockspring itself. Always place an airbag with the back facing down.

Remove the steering wheel 13 mm bolt (manual suggests you not to re-use it) use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel.

With the wheel removed there are 4 philips screw that hold the steering wheel backing.

Either order the backing with holes for the switches or dremel out the holes as in pics.

The switches should be placed with the connector at the top, facing the center, black switch backing on the left side of the wheel and white on the right.

The switch harness runs along the top of the backing with the connector for the clockspring coming from the left side as in pics.

Replace the steering wheel with bolt torque at 65 Nm. Connect the switch harness, white connector to clockspring and the two airbag connectors. Place and bolt up the airbag. Enjoy your new switches.

Here's the pics

Re: Mods 2 Go

*The service manual says that the connector side of the switch goes to the bottom,
that's not right. For the XK, the connector side of the switch goes towards the top.
The manual is showing what looks like a section from the Dodge Intrepid manual
with Intrepid steering wheel diagrams.

have an 2008 sport, bought the switches and wire harness in the sticky. I should have looked at the back of the steering wheel before i bought the parts, seems they changed the 08 steering wheel to all one piece. removed the airbag (held on by three retainers now, no more bolts) to see if i still could do it, nope no port for the wire harness (only one port on the clockspring now) so there went that.

i think you should add a note to the sticky so dumbies like myself don't waste their time...
