I could not find any threads via the search function that addressed this noise, so forgive me if this has been covered here.

I had the Rough Country 2" Lift Kit installed last week at a local shop. They did the alignment after the install. It looks very nice! They should have built them stock like this. I still have the stock tires on (245/65/17 Forteras), but will upgrade when they wear out.

My question is, I am hearing a humming noise that is similar to tire noise, and I thought that might be what it is since there was an alignment that may have changed the way the tires are wearing. I asked the guy at the shop to take it for a ride. He says it is due to the lift putting the drivetrain at a slightly different position than stock, so I am hearing the humming noise from that, and not the tires.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this going to cause problems down the road? The humming is not too loud, but it could get annoying on longer trips. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, on the front tires, I never noticed how close the tires are to the suspension. Literally less than an inch between the top of the tire and the suspension piece (not sure what the part is). If I go a bigger tire, say 255/70, how close will that be then and will it be a problem? Or should I stay with a 245 width, possibly 245/75?

How many miles are on your XK? You may have a u-joint with some wear that is only exaggerated by the lift. Does it seem to be coming from the back of the Jeep? I had some very minor driveline vibration at about 55 mph with my Jeep. If it's coming from the front, it may be a worn CV joint working at a slightly increased angle. The distance between the tire and the upper balljoint/knuckle doesn't change during suspension movement/steering, so you're OK there. My wife's XK is running at BDS 2" kit with 265/65/18's and has less than 1/4" clearance and we've not had a problem with over 60K miles since install. If you choose larger tires in the future, there are spacers available that push the wheels out 1.25 or 1.5 inches. Many guys here use them and I had them on my old XK.

Thanks for the reply, kmax. I have 70k miles on my 2006. The noise is coming from the front only. How much am I looking at to replace a CV joint?

I have a 4" lift installed and have the same noise that your talking about. Since the lift has been installed, I have upgraded just about everything under the front end. I will keep the list short, the only thing that hasn't been replaced is my lower control arms. I have rcv performace cv axles and that changed nothing. I've had multiple people ride in my jeep and ask me what the heck that noise was. Me personally, I just turn up the radio.

gopack - The CV joint can be checked for wear/play and usually it's pretty obvious if one is going bad. If they prove to be in good shape, there is the chance the noise is coming from one of the inboard bearings in the front axle housing. I've heard of the occasional failure with those and it can be due to higher mileage or the additional stress from a lift. If you have a mechanic you like, have them look through those possibilities. Gulf - have you replaced the inboard bearings? I know they can go for some time even after they start making noise. Mine never went bad that I know of, but my XK was only at 75K when I sold it.

Minus the cv axles and the wheel bearings, I have not looked at the bearings in my front axle. That is something I would like to look at, but my noise is worst at 15 mph, above or bellow that speed it goes way.

FYI. It turns out the noise was due to a bad bearing in the front drivers side. Replaced it and the noise is gone. Much quieter.
