Yes, I committed the famous maneuver while on vacation, it was nighttime and the car was a little p.o.s. late 80's early 90's nissan sentra that I couldn't even see as I was backing out of a driveway on base where the streets are about 10ft. wide. It was a friend of mine, his daughter's first car that I hit! He got to the scene on duty of course...looked at it and said, "are you kidding me? Have you seen this thing before? Get outta here!" Didn't have to tell me twice! Only thing it did was leave a small scuff on the side of the rear bumper. The BU sensor's went off after I hit it too! WTH??

don't feel bad, your not the first one :stickpoke:..... and ditto on the back up sensors, I've been in and out of garages since September trying to get the sensors to operate "correctly"

I did the same think in the parking lot at work right before Christmas. Ditto on the back up sensor and I had to replace the rear bumber skin.

i think mopar or chrysler or whoever makes them, should pay for the damages if its was cause due to the faulty sensors.

My sensors seem to work, but I've never fully trusted them to gauge whether or not I'd hit something. The ol' Mark I Eyeball never fails, though.

Hummm - when I got my used commander in Aug. 08, the back up sensors did not work. Took it to dealer for warrenty repair, and they told me wiring was unhooked and charged me for the repair. This past Friday, I backed up to hook up my trailer, sensor worked OK. I toggled the dash button and turned the sensors off and hauled the trailer to destination. After unhooking trailer and toggled dash switch back on, the sensors are not working. I haven't had time to crawl under and look for wiring issue, but the only thing I did was plug the 7 pin trailer wiring connector in the factory plug.
Now I'm reading here that there may be other issues with the sensors. If I cannot locate any wiring issue, I will head to the dealer for diagnosis. This could become less than pretty if I paid to have a common defect repaired.
Stay tuned - I'll let you know what I find out.

I agree, the sensors are there to help you and not take the place of doing it the right way. I have to remind myself not to count on them 100% when I find myself in a near miss situation.

yeah, I was using my DS mirror and the car was too short, and in my blind spot it was my fault, though it would have been nice if they would have actually worked!

I just witnessed a nearly identical accident.

It happened in a small parking lot at the video store, where a small Ford Focus was hit (backed into) by a Commander. Both drivers began backing-up at the same time. The Ford driver saw the Jeep and stopped, but the Commander driver never saw the Ford and backed into him. The Commander was “BU-Sonar-Equipped.”

I gave my name to both drivers, and did hear from their respective insurance companies as they tried to sort out the “fault.”

My BU-Sonar works, and I depend upon this when parallel parking; but, a rearview camera and BU-Sonar is best.

The sensors saved my _ss with my '07 XK Sport only two weeks old. I was backing into an odd-shaped spot and started to hear the sensor alarm. Being a new owner, I really wasn't familar with them yet, but luckily stopped in time. Behind me was a telephone pole that was in my blind spot - that short spot between where your rear-view and side mirrors don't overlap.

Hitting that pole would've been very expensive, not to mention a bad ding to the ego when I got home (and the wife found out). Hitting things is usually her dept.

could be sonar if they use ultrasonic sound waves. not looked into the tech spec but would suggest ultrasonic as irts cheaper technology than radar.

I have not backed into anyone or thing yet...knock on wood...but I have had someone back into me. A family member backed into my XK on day two of having my new purchase. I had purchased it in Sept 06 from a deal in Dubuque, IA. It sat there on the back lot till I went to Chicago to visit family for Thanksgiving. Flew into Chicago on a Friday, grabbed the Greyhound bus up to Dubuque on Saturday to pick up my baby and on Sunday morning I was awaken to what I thought had to be a joke but it was not. This is not what I had planned for the first ding or scratch...
