Reading about the thread where an engine was water damaged, I remembered that I was considering changing where my air intake is situated.

I was wanting to know what people think of the J8 military snorkels that sit on the hood of the jeep?

I was thinking this would be a decent compromise between an all out roof line snorkel, and my current CAI location.

Thoughts? Possible issues? it looks like the J8 intake is on the passenger side just like the current cai.

How difficult would it be to get a hold of the parts?

Airflow makes a snorkel that is a direct fit on our XK's. There's no sense trying to piece together some other snorkel.

a49'er fan has a snorkle on his Jeep. There are pictures of it in his garage thread. :eek:rangehat:

Well money is one reason thats why I'm making my own. The looks is another I don't want that huge thing running all the way up my jeep. Did I mention money if the airflow snorkel was like 200 bones then maybe I could see it.

Crazy tarzan: There are two members on here selling the stock air intake systems. I was planning on buying one to piece something together. I am also trying to figure out a way to have the intake come up threw the hood just like the military hummer. Was going to swap positions between the air box and the over flow box to get the thing a little higher. I haven't settled on where to get the cold air from yet but was thinking a stove pipe like design right by the passenger side corner. Let us know what you come up with.

Thats still to far forward me. I think if I can get the stove pipe section to not look like crap coming out of the hood by the passenger window that would be the best place except for of course a full snorkel really being the ideal spot for fresh air. I'll get one of those stock air boxes to experiment on over the winter and see what I can come up with. Just so you know my motivations I'm deathly afraid of water coming anywhere near my XK since I almost hydro-locked it the first weekend I owned it.

I figure if I'm in water that comes up that far, I'm in too deep for my commander. Especially since 'technically' its my wife's car. I was actually thinking of having it set slightly higher up the hood, but have to look and see where things are situated.

In part it's because I find the roof line snorkel a bit much for any thing I want to do in the commander, but seeing how I can look up under the bumper and over the tire and see my cai, I think it needs to be changed a bit, because here and there I do find puddles, or small ponds, to drive through.

Just so you know there is more to it then where the stock intake sits. The whole thing is a bad design. It's like the front end pushes or funnels any water towards it. I've gone threw just 4" of water and found spots on my filter from that. I've felt my XK hesitate during a tropical storm I got stuck driving in. Now granted the amount of rain was just ridiculous and at one point blowing up I think but come on really.

You know Sal, i like the .mil design you and I were talking about more and more. ( top secret, cant elaborate any more :rofl: ) Think you can get your hands on a damaged piece to experiment with, maybe a quick mock-up ? The hardest part will be getting it to seal up tightly when the hood is shut down. If it doesnt seal then it is a waste of time.

My thought would be to cut the hole in the hood and turn the CAI pipe so that it makes teh filter point up and then put some kind of cover over it to protect form water.

I got some ideas floating in my head from our conversation. I think some hood modification will be required for it to work but sealing it is going to be no problem. The cool thing is like on the HMMWV the stove pipe will be adjustable oh yea.

Why not desighn a intake like the one form Spectre performance ive seen them for a wrangler. The basically run the air intake through the firewall to draw cool dry air from the cabin.

That sounds cool but I don't think that it would be something that can be done at least not if you have a HEMI. There really isn't that much room to run an intake tube from the front of the engine throught the firewall. I like the idea of a hood scope but I think it will look funny on the XK maybe a cowl type hood would be better.
