Jeep won't start/"Transmission over Temp" error

Hey all, I really really hope someone has some direction on here, as I'm about ready to throttle this so-called "dealer" I have my Jeep at right now.

The description may be a little long, so please bare with me.

Jeep Commander - 2007 - approx. 58,000 miles

About a year ago, my Commander started having this really strange issue where it would drive completely fine some days, but other days when I went to start it, it wouldn't make any sort of crank or catching sound, it just wouldn't start at all. All of the lights on my dash would flash, and then the "malfunction indicator light" would light up, and the little output screen where my mileage would usually read would light up with the "Transmission over Temp" message. After reading this and other similar forums, I read somewhere about leaving it to sit for 30 minutes because someone figured out with their own Commander that it was an issue with the key being locked out by the security system. Letting it sit worked for me, so I began using the spare key that I had, and the issue stopped.

Now, two weeks ago, out of nowhere, the issue is back but slightly different. We were out of town, and the Jeep had been driving like a champ. It had even just before we left had its inspection, oil change, and total fluid change. Friday, we were fine, and Saturday, we were okay. Sunday, it did the same thing a year ago with the no start/malfunction light/trans over temp message. We let it sit for 30 minutes as we had done before, and it started up, so we drove where we were going for the day. About 4 hours after we got to our destination, it was doing the SAME thing again. We let it sit for 30 minutes again, and this time it still wouldn't start. So we went to dinner, came back approximately 1.5 hours later, and it was STILL doing the same thing. So by then, we knew we were stranded for the night, so we stayed at a hotel. The following day ( approximately 11 hours after we had last tried it), it was STILL doing the same thing! So I did some more googling and came across another solution. I unhooked the negative terminal, put the key in the ignition, and turned it to the "on" position for 5 minutes. I then took the key out, rehooked the negative terminal, and tried to start the car. This time, it did start. Luckily we were able to get home without needing a tow.

Not even an hour after we got home, it wasn't starting again. And this time, the negative terminal trick did not work. It started and didn't start intermittently for the next week. The following week I just worked from home and didn't even drive it for fear of being stranded somewhere again.

This week, the dealer local to us was FINALLY able to get my Jeep in. It luckily started the day I was to take it out to them (Monday) and drop it off and give my explanation of the issue. Yesterday and today both, they're calling me saying it's starting ideally every time they try it, and of course, they can find no codes on their systems!

I'm really at my wit's end. I can't drive this car around, knowing that at any moment, I could be stuck somewhere again. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone (hopefully) have the same issue that got resolved for you? A mechanic that I am not, I'm a little pissed that the dealer mechanic has not tried anything other than trying to get it not to start. I mean, really, how did they fix cars before there were so many damned computer codes? It seems to me that he should be testing things like the starter, transmission, security chips, etc., for points of failure even if he can't replicate the issue.

Well, if you've stuck with me this long, thank you! I look forward to everyone's suggestions!

Hey Geek,

I would search the Transmisson over temp" in the search here. I have read (and have also experience this too, just not the not starting part) and it seems to be different experience for most. Some it has been the starter, others some key issues and so forth. I would encourge you to look into some of those options on how they fixed their problems. Good Luck and Keep us posted!
So after 2.5 days of pissing with it, they finally got my Jeep to not start. I don't know what code they pulled, but it led them to discover that there was a corroded connector between my starter and the TIPM. Does this answer make sense to anyone? I dont know enough about cars in general to know if that finding makes sense, and I'm just worried that there was something else going on that they missed because they saw this wire and stopped looking. However if this answer seems to make sense to you all, I"ll just pick up my Jeep and go on my way happy that it's FINALLY fixed.

Thanks!

Nicole
Transmission won't start problem on Commander

Well, I have the exact same Jeep, with almost the same mileage, and I am now stuck in the mode where the Jeep will not start. This happened in June once and the car would not start for a day. The morning that I was going to have it towed, it started and I was able to get it to the Jeep dealer. I had the same situation there. The car started, they tested the battery and it showed no problems.

THis week, after driving a short distance, it died at a restaurant. I could not get home so I had to walk. The next morning, it started on the third crank. I tried every trick I could find but not the battery disconnect one (yet).

This was ALSO right after I had new tires installed. I thought something was loose but can not find any problems.

Question though. What is the TIPM?

I'll post what I find out.

TIPM = Totally Integrated Power Module
Just heard from my dealer in WI where I had the Jeep Commander towed. The failure to start was caused by corrosion on the starter connection. This is very similar to the other member's outcome. Why it shows Transmission Over Temp on the panel is anyones quess but I plan to question the mechanic about it. Did not yet drive the Jeep or see how this theory holds up.
Wow, this is exactly what my wife has been dealing with all the way down to the "Transmission over Temp" message. 2007 3.7 L w/ almost 75K miles.

It started 3 months ago, we had it towed to the dealer and they sat on it for 1 day and couldn't replicate the issue. Then a month passed with no problems until it happened again and I sent it to my local mechanic and he couldn't replicate the issue so he sat on it for a whole week trying to start it once or twice a day! (we were on vacation). I had already done a little research about the starter terminals and requested he "clean" the terminals on or connecting to the starter and he did. So I thought we were set, but...almost exactly one month later its back.

It looks like my best bet is to take it back to the dealer. How much should we look to spend to fix the issue? Should I just start w/ the connecter between the starter and TIPM or if it will only be another few bucks are there multiple connectors and/or wires to replace that will almost certainly correct the issue?

The harness that attaches to the starter is a replaceable service part.

As you have found, cleaning the terminals can buy some time but usually the connector has been overheated and a subsequent failure will occur.

Once the harness has been exchanged and the starter terminals thoroughly cleaned reassemble using di-electric grease on the terminals.
This will prevent moisture from causing a replay a few years from now.

Now, not to throw another theory into the ring, but there is a tsb out there that is for random no starts and lights on in the dash. It has do do with the front controller module flaking out. I can look it up again if someone is interested. In short, it flakes out and loses communication with the rest of the CAN bus system. This is a problem because its kind ofo th "gateway" so to speak that every other module relies on. So when you turn the key, the pcm, or steering column module...not sure which off the top of my head... tells the front controller module to send power to the starter relay. If its sleeping, she's not going to start.
I am having the same issue with a 2007 Commander 3.7. Only difference being it will flash the Transmission Over Temp and then crank over with out firing. It only does this after being warmed up, so far has never done it cold.

What is this Front Controller Module that was mentioned above?
I found that TSB and, though it is listed as a tsb for 2007 XKs, when you read it, it's actually for the 2006. (It is numbered 08-060-05, fyi.)
We are having the no-start, flashing dashlight issues with our 2007 with 83K, same as geekehnikeh. We just bought it used from a large and well known dealer network in our area only 6 weeks ago. I am taking it in to a non-dealer mechanic tomorrow along with some of the above posts to see what he thinks. He was upfront with me about not being able to help if he can't get it to present the problem. It has been intermittent. Though so far we can get it to start by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting in after a few minutes. We tried this based on a hunch that it might be a sensor/computer miscommunication problem. It might be a fluke that it worked though, from what I am reading above.

I'll repost tomorrow evening with whatever the mech finds.

Your battery may be going bad. Or it could be the ignition switch.
soo has anyone discovered what is the cause for this no start trans overtemp error??
is it the key, ignition switch, trans temp sensor, starter wiring, starter, or bad connections on the wiring?? i need help with this cause my wifes jeep has done this 3 or 4 times now and i need to fix the actual problem i just dont wanna throw parts at it and not fix anything.. thanks for the help

I had the same problem with the transmission overtime error, but didn't have the starting problem. When I could get the code, the fan would turn on high. Ended up being the PCM (Power Train Control Module). After changing that, never had the problem again.
bought my 2007 with 25000 miles on it and drove it about 200 miles then it would not start after my wife stopped to get kids from daycare. it has been at jeep dealer for 5 weeks as of today, just sick, they canot get it to start, it will start and run with remote engin start b ut dies once key is put in ignition. the morning after i towed it in dealer said they could not replicate and that it was starting. i went out started it turned off and it wouyld not start so there it sits. will let u know what was wrong if they ever figure it out.
(I know I said I was taking it to the mechanic a few weeks ago, but I just couldn't stand the thought of being without my jeep for any amount of time. Finally got over that when I got stranded twice, once when I had to be somewhere in a certain amount of time, and once with a load of groceries.)
So I found this post, printed it and took it to the non-dealer mechanic in my area. They will open it up and look at it tomorrow. I warned them that the problem is intermittent and they may not be able to replicate it. He said they will check the electrical pathways and read over the forum thread that I brought along.
We had the battery and alternator checked, they are fine... and a friend and former jeep mechanic advised that it is not likely a starter or ignition problem, more likely a solenoid, contact or wiring harness problem. If you are having an intermittent non-start problem with 'transmission overtemp' warning... check out the thread I linked to above...

The battery can ckeck out OK and still be bad.
The wire connecting to the solenoid is a push on spade type connector. This is a very poor design and apparently has been replaced with the type of connection which fits over the post and has a nut to hold it in place. I found this out when I looked at replacement starters and was told I would have to replace the wiring as well (for those that have had the starter and wiring harness replaced - this explains why it works fine now). I was able to crimp the spade connector on the harness somewhat to make the connection snug enough where it did not slide back and it has cured the problem. The wire does not have to come off the solenoid to affect the start up. It moves down slightly, most likely from vibration, and the connection is lost. This also most likely explains the intermittent issues where the car will start some of the time.
I had the Transmission over temp message come up on me today while I was driving up a mountain and back down, after coasting down the mountain in neutral and riding the brakes for awhile it went away. Would having put the bigger tires on cause this problem by making the tranny work harder to turn the wheels?
