Jeep won't start/"Transmission over Temp" error

Hey all, I really really hope someone has some direction on here, as I'm about ready to throttle this so-called "dealer" I have my Jeep at right now.

The description may be a little long, so please bare with me.

Jeep Commander - 2007 - approx. 58,000 miles

About a year ago, my Commander started having this really strange issue where it would drive completely fine some days, but other days when I went to start it, it wouldn't make any sort of crank or catching sound, it just wouldn't start at all. All of the lights on my dash would flash, and then the "malfunction indicator light" would light up, and the little output screen where my mileage would usually read would light up with the "Transmission over Temp" message. After reading this and other similar forums, I read somewhere about leaving it to sit for 30 minutes because someone figured out with their own Commander that it was an issue with the key being locked out by the security system. Letting it sit worked for me, so I began using the spare key that I had, and the issue stopped.

Now, two weeks ago, out of nowhere, the issue is back but slightly different. We were out of town, and the Jeep had been driving like a champ. It had even just before we left had its inspection, oil change, and total fluid change. Friday, we were fine, and Saturday, we were okay. Sunday, it did the same thing a year ago with the no start/malfunction light/trans over temp message. We let it sit for 30 minutes as we had done before, and it started up, so we drove where we were going for the day. About 4 hours after we got to our destination, it was doing the SAME thing again. We let it sit for 30 minutes again, and this time it still wouldn't start. So we went to dinner, came back approximately 1.5 hours later, and it was STILL doing the same thing. So by then, we knew we were stranded for the night, so we stayed at a hotel. The following day ( approximately 11 hours after we had last tried it), it was STILL doing the same thing! So I did some more googling and came across another solution. I unhooked the negative terminal, put the key in the ignition, and turned it to the "on" position for 5 minutes. I then took the key out, rehooked the negative terminal, and tried to start the car. This time, it did start. Luckily we were able to get home without needing a tow.

Not even an hour after we got home, it wasn't starting again. And this time, the negative terminal trick did not work. It started and didn't start intermittently for the next week. The following week I just worked from home and didn't even drive it for fear of being stranded somewhere again.

This week, the dealer local to us was FINALLY able to get my Jeep in. It luckily started the day I was to take it out to them (Monday) and drop it off and give my explanation of the issue. Yesterday and today both, they're calling me saying it's starting ideally every time they try it, and of course, they can find no codes on their systems!

I'm really at my wit's end. I can't drive this car around, knowing that at any moment, I could be stuck somewhere again. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone (hopefully) have the same issue that got resolved for you? A mechanic that I am not, I'm a little pissed that the dealer mechanic has not tried anything other than trying to get it not to start. I mean, really, how did they fix cars before there were so many damned computer codes? It seems to me that he should be testing things like the starter, transmission, security chips, etc., for points of failure even if he can't replicate the issue.

Well, if you've stuck with me this long, thank you! I look forward to everyone's suggestions!

Nicole

Wow, this is exactly what my wife has been dealing with all the way down to the "Transmission over Temp" message. 2007 3.7 L w/ almost 75K miles.

It started 3 months ago, we had it towed to the dealer and they sat on it for 1 day and couldn't replicate the issue. Then a month passed with no problems until it happened again and I sent it to my local mechanic and he couldn't replicate the issue so he sat on it for a whole week trying to start it once or twice a day! (we were on vacation). I had already done a little research about the starter terminals and requested he "clean" the terminals on or connecting to the starter and he did. So I thought we were set, but...almost exactly one month later its back.

It looks like my best bet is to take it back to the dealer. How much should we look to spend to fix the issue? Should I just start w/ the connecter between the starter and TIPM or if it will only be another few bucks are there multiple connectors and/or wires to replace that will almost certainly correct the issue?
number1; Didyou get this fixed/ Any updates?
Just heard from my dealer in WI where I had the Jeep Commander towed. The failure to start was caused by corrosion on the starter connection. This is very similar to the other member's outcome. Why it shows Transmission Over Temp on the panel is anyones quess but I plan to question the mechanic about it. Did not yet drive the Jeep or see how this theory holds up.
David; How did this go ?
Does it turn over ? Are u in the salt belt? Could be the push on connector at the starter.
Just had the same issue, but noticed it was acting like it wasn't getting enough voltage to the cylanoid to kick it into the fly wheel. Tried charging the battery with no success. Replaced it and it solved my problem. Hopefully this isn't just the beginning =]

How long have you had your Commander?

Not trying to jinx you but when I bought mine 2 years ago, I had to replace the battery about a month after I got it - mine completely died on me without warning and that wound up leading to quite a run of repairs over the next 6 months or so that followed.

In my case, alot of it was just neglect by the previous owner, who of course was a woman...LOL.
any new updates on this, my wifes jeep has the same issue. hooked up a reader and got transmission codes , loss of communication. thinking it may be that the jeep thinks it is not in park and won't start? has anyone tried moving the shifter to see if it would start?
I have a 2006 Commander with the 5.7 engine. Last month the problem starting the Jeep started up. I had the following prior to the starting problem. The transmission over temp alarm would come on, it always happened when I first started the jeep the first time and the transmission had to be cold still. I found that all I had to do was to stop, turn the ignition key off wait a second or two and then restart and the problem would go away and not return until a few weeks later or so. I checked the transmission fluid to see if it showed any sign of over heating and it was fine. This was four years ago and an occasional issue. In low range 4WD, it would say need to service 4WD system. Last month I had the problem with the key security sensor would allow the Jeep to start and then shut down 2 seconds later, just as the manual says the security system will do when it has an invalid key. Did with all three keys, it got so bad it did it four or five times a day and thennot at all for a week or so. Checking the recalls for the Jeep it needed the P41 Ignition switch and core changed out. I took it to the local dealer and they ordered the parts and I scheduled the work for the next week. I had found I could keep restarting it over and over and it would finally run after 10 or so times, sometimes in a safe mode where the transmission would only be in 4th gear, but you simply restarted and that cleared. After the P41 and a unknown transmission recall were done the problem went away, but before the recalls were done the dealer had the Jeep do a non start. They told me that the recalls would not fix the problem and I left it for four days and they couldn't find the problem. I told them I would bring it back. Surprise it had ran just fine for the last three weeks. I think that the recall change of the switch required them to unplug some of the cables and connections and that cleared the problem, for now. If it returns I will check the connection on the starter solenoid and all the plugs and cables I can. Good luck.

Odd.. I had the recall done for ignition and transmission but still have the security light issue? If any one figures this out it would sure help some people lol

I believe there is a transmission shifter sensor that could cause this issue if it goes bad.

If that shifter sensor goes bad, I don't think it matters where you move the shifter - it won't start.
So after 2.5 days of pissing with it, they finally got my Jeep to not start. I don't know what code they pulled, but it led them to discover that there was a corroded connector between my starter and the TIPM. Does this answer make sense to anyone? I dont know enough about cars in general to know if that finding makes sense, and I'm just worried that there was something else going on that they missed because they saw this wire and stopped looking. However if this answer seems to make sense to you all, I"ll just pick up my Jeep and go on my way happy that it's FINALLY fixed.

Thanks!

Jeep commander limp mode, stuck in 3rd gear, Transmission over temp light, dying randomly, SOLVED:
Nicole, I know it's been a decade since your post but thanks to your post and 2 years of pulling hair out I've finally solved my commander issues and want to help others.
My jeep started Dying randomly, on the freeway or wherever and trans over temp light would come on. After several months and a trip to the dealership that got me nowhere I touched the first harness on ecm (transmission harness of the computer) and it died. So I replaced the computer. It stopped dying randomly but the transmission over temp light kept coming on. Eventually transmission would go into limp mode and stuck in 3rd gear. If I unplugged the battery for 10 minutes we could get rid of limp mode until computer finally "learned" there was a problem and cycle of over temp and limp mode would begin. Thanks to your post and some other people mentioning this infamous yellow starter wire I finally checked it out and wire was bare and had been rubbing on steering yoke shorting out the computer. I fixed the yellow wire thinking it was all good now but no, instead of getting by in drive for a whole learn cycle it would immediately go into limp mode stuck in 3rd gear when started. I learned I could cycle the key off to accessorie 3 times and that would give some time before going into limp mode. Since yellow wire was now fixed I replaced the computer again and all is good. No trans over temp, no limp mode. If I had just looked for that shorted out yellow wire in the beginning before replacing the computer it would have saved 2 years of headaches. Dealer didnt catch it either when I took it in for randomly dying.
