Hi All

I have a Commander 2007 CRD. Awesome vehicle. I bought it about 2 years back and Ive done around 40 000 km on it. Since Ive had it its had a knocking/loose sound on the front suspension when I go over bumps. It sounded at first as though it was the shocks, so I had those replaced. The loose knock sound is still there. I have checked the bushes on swing arms and wishbones etc but cant see anything. What else could it be? I had mechanics also look at it but no luck.

Rack and pinion replacement will fix you issue. ;)

I have the same exact sound in the front of my XK. Going to replace mine when I get all the superlift plans in place.

I haven't priced the job yet, unfortunately. Less than $600 with parts and labor if I had to guess? I'm sure the dealer will be in the $1800 neighborhood though, HAHA!! Let us know when you have it checked and what they quote you to fix.

Hi David, it can be anything. In the range from the steering rack to.. worn caliper pins. Happily both problems are chip in fixing.

Loose steering rack can cured with the help of special inserts. Here is the detailed procedure. It's in Russian, but you'll understand: https://www.drive2.ru/l/8464346/

Worn caliper pins could be cured with thin o-rings instead of wide bushing which is rarely fits the diameter and more prevents the pins from working than really helps.

I would replace the front sway bar bushing they are a common problem. I took them to NAPA and the guy there said he would bet they were good, should have bet, I replaced them and my noise went away.

If it sounds like the front end sort of rattles in a pot hole, it's more than likely the rack. When you're at a stop, turn the wheel quickly back and forth and see if it will pop after a few turns. Mine will pop every now and then.

Hi All - thanks so much for the input! I am going to get onto it tomorrow and look at each of the above. I will keep you posted on my findings and hopefully it will be of some help to someone in the future as well...

This is what I was gonna suggest. Cheap bushings with cheap mounts makes for a quick and cheap fix if this is your issue, and this issue can be pretty common. If it turns out to not be the issue, than at least it would be a cheap upgrade with the polyurethane bushings.
