Limp mode and engine light

541 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  ConnieMarie
I have a 2008 commander. Check engine always on. It drops into “limp mode” randomly. I turn it off, restart engine without dropping into limp mode again. This is random, sometimes occurring weeks apart. Also, after starting motor, when I brake, the ESP and traction light illuminate and I can’t take to out of park. Some times, the alarm lights go off after going through car wash.
The Jeep is at 3rd shop trying to identify the issue unsuccessfully. Had the “brain” and wiring harness replaced. They “checked the wiring” no probs found.
Could the “limp mode” be tied to the alarms that are illuminated on the dash. The techs look at me like I’m nuts when I tell them what it’s doing. They’ve fixed the probs that the codes identify, but nothings changed.
Ideas ANYONE????

I am guessing it is wheel speed sensors, which screw up Anti-Lock Brakes, which screws up ESP and Traction Control, which also screws up Transmission shift points... Have you thought about another mechanic? Do they give you a list of codes? Or just say they fixed the source of the codes? Ask for a list of the codes. Likely have some from engine, some from Transmission Control Module, some from Electrical Module, some from.... you get the idea...

Something is wrong with your wheel sensors. This can be something as simple as a mismatched tire. It happened to me when my spare wasn't the same size (65 vs 70). Obviously not the same as your issue, as yours is intermittent, but the results are the same. The fact that it can happen after a car wash points strongly toward a sensor issue.

Hey, I’ve been dealing with this Limp mode problem for a couple of years!
And the Limp is really at the dealers service deptments !
What I found is my 2007 Commander w/ 3.7 v6 has a 6 bolt trans pan it a Mercedes trams Jeep/Chrysler assembled these trans here in US replacing the Hall-Electronic switches in the top of the trans with Mechanical switches know to fall from magnetic electrical dust( This board is under the Gear/Trans selector stick & consol) Sometimes spray cleaning w/ Electrical board- parts cleaner after removal will Temp Fixes the issues Buy a new board will the Hall Electronic Switches is my suggestion about 3hundred buck give or take.
These Elec problems are very singular to the Commanders.
This is all after Hundreds of dollars thousand at least at three different Dealers.
Love this Jeep otherwize

Commanders powered by a 3.7L V-6 come with the W5A580 NAG-1 Five Speed Automatic Transmission, which was originally launched by Mercedes back in 2003.

I had it in a 2008 WK with the 3.7L V-6 that I used to own, never had a problem with it.

$2650 later and it’s not. I’m moving it to another repair facility. Somewhere that encourages mechanics to think beyond the diagnostic codes. And somewhere that doesn’t dismiss a female driver.
