I’ve owned about 10 Jeeps. CJ-5, 7, TJ, several Cherokees, and most recently an 89 Wagoneer. I’m now hunting for a Commander. Even though there’s talk of bringing the Wagoneer back as a luxury SUV, I think these Commanders kind of embody the true spirit of the old Waggy’s.

Just looked at a 2006 Ltd. w/116k. 4.7. When I drove it, it felt good. But there was a loud roaring noise. I checked the tires, and they were Goodyears, and in good shape. When I looked under the vehicle, the rear diff is leaking badly at the yoke seal. I'm thinking this is probably causing the roar. The truck is kinda rough. Interior is ok from the front seats forward. Interior door handles are broke, but all the gadgets (except the DVD) work. All of the rear seats, and the headliner are dirty. The carpet in the rear is stained. The front grill is broke. The lift gate is damaged, and it might need an exhaust from the muffler back.
Aside from that, it's pretty. Gold with grey interior. Power everything, NAV, etc.
Is $3k a fair price?

@vedivan;

Welcome to the forum;

That sounds like one hell of a project and right out of the gate if your differential is shot, that's a pretty big repair bill - and it sounds like there are a lot of other issues to deal with as well.

I'd steer clear of this one if I were in your place. Maybe try a car buying search engine like car gurus which I posted below to help you with your search:

Also, below is a thread with a lot of good information of what to look for when shopping for a Commander.

Best of luck with your search & keep us posted with how it goes.

Welcome!

I would be hesitant to make that investment. That’s a lot of $ to shell right at the beginning, and that’s only what you CAN see. If it was a car to just be nasty in, it may be worth it, but if not, I wouldn’t buy it. BUT I’m probably in a different stage of life than you haha

There are better examples out there, I'd pass on that can of worms and if I'm not mistaken the 05-07 was the weakest 4.7.

If it was a hemi qd2 it'd probably be worth it as a project, but the early 4.7's didn't make much more power then the 3.7's. I'd look for something better taken care of.

That's correct.

The 2008 Model year is when Powertech redesigned the intake for the 4.7L in the Commander and also added an extra spark plug per cylinder resulting in an increase of 70HP & 44 ft/lbs of torque.

Pretty impressive actually considering its essentially the same longblock! They also went from cable actuated throttle body to drive by wire.

Well I can tell you with confidence, that with the AFE Magnum Force Stage 2 Intake System, the AFE MACH Force-Xp 3" Stainless Steel Cat-Back Exhaust System and the 93 Octane Superchips performance loaded, I can run with any Hemi-powered Commander around.

Thanks! I'm not afraid of throwing some $ at it. I'm a car guy and can do some stuff. I probably wouldn't attempt replacing the gears. I would attempt the diff as a whole. But I really want an 09-10 LTD.

Sounds like there are a lot of cosmetic issues too.....but if you want to take the plunge that's your call.

You came here asking for advice and we're giving it to you.

Personally, I wouldn't pull the trigger on this one - you can find one that isn't so beat-up for a little more money and less headaches.

By the time you add up all the cost of all the replacement parts & repair bills you're going to rack up with this one, it will almost certainly wind up costing you more than if you just looked around and bought a nicer one for a little more money.

Just my 2 cents - anyway, good luck whatever route you decide to go.

This is way too common on so many forums.

People post for advice which is generally legitimate advice only to ignore it. This one is typical with serious red flags.

There's a point we're the money going in is higher than the value of the vehicle. This is one of the least desirable XKs too.

That being said, it's his call.

Yep, I hear you.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole.
