Hello, My girlfriend loves the Jeep but today it got too bad to drive. Good thing she bought a new vehicle as a primary, the Jeep can sit in the driveway until it's fixed.



It has a couple issues (2008 5.7hemi.) A coolant hose that feeds the heater core (just at the firewall) is leaking. The hose fittings look unique. Can anyone tell me about replacing those elbows?


Also the front end is grinding like CRAZY. Today, I thought it might lock up. It would stop grinding when accelerating, but start with the decel. It's not the brakes and I doubt it's the wheel bearings. But I'm confused how a front diff would go bad on a Jeep that's never been put in 4wd.

The T fitting on those coolant hoses is pretty tough to find, but they leak pretty regularly. The two hoses have part numbers 68000976AA and 68000977AA, and as far as I know they come as a single piece with the hose and fittings.

XKs are full time 4wd systems. If you've never changed your diff fluids, your diff could very well be grinding itself apart.

Well, for one thing, it is full-time 4WD. In other words it is always in 4HI, with the option to put it in 4LO when needed. Do you have any warning lights in the instrument display? Also, check for codes and let us know what you find.

Welcome to the forum; Post some pics of your GF's Commander when you can. Unfortunately, her XK is pretty up there in mileage and inevitably, things will start to fail and/or break. And as @jeep5253 pointed out already, your XK is in 4-HIGH all the time, so, it's not hard to see how the Front Diff could go bad. Thank's for the info and the links. This will be very helpful. I'm told that the diff fluid was changed at regular intervals, but no receipts were saved. I insisted that the "no need to save receipts" ethos be changed right away. I did not realize that the system was full time 4wd. Interesting.

Is it possible that the front grinding is actually the front driveshaft cv joint? The one at the transfer case goes bad quite commonly. The boot breaks and water gets in and it eventually dries up and grinds to dust.

Oops. I mistakenly listed this Commander as Quadra-Trac II. It's not, it's a Quadra-Drive II.
That adds another potential problem; QDII not only requires regular diff oil changes, but also a specific LSD additive from Mopar. It's possible that the additive wasn't added when serviced, causing the grinding.

I agree with this. My CV joint went bad at 112,000 miles. Welcome to the money pit! :grin2:

What were the symptoms when your CV joints went bad?

When mine went bad I had a strange vibration and whine that would vary according to speed or load on the axle. I thought I had a bad front dif bearing or something as it sounded like a gear whine under certain loads. When it got worse it started clicking at some lower speeds like when slowing down at intersections or slowly taking off. I was actually quite shocked at how quiet things got after rebuilding the cv joint. I didnt expect the gear whine sound to go away. I didnt realize it was related at the time. It was the best $75 I ever spent on the truck.

Thanks for that info. When you got the CV joint out, was it obvious that it was bad or did you install a new one and hope for the best?
