Why does such a nice interior have no map lights? I hate it at night. I have tried buying all the little plug in ones and it feels cheap. Just curious.

I don't own a Commander yet so I am going on just a guess based off what is true in some other Jeeps...

If you press the light above the drivers door doesn't it illuminate?

The four lights around the perimeter at top-of-head level can be turned on individually by pressing them -- haven't read a map yet with mine but I think they'll be ok if I can find my reading glasses...but they're certainly not a focused light source that puts a spot on a map, I'd say.

Have you tried the lights Commo mentioned? I haven't had to read a map, day or night, the navigation system is great. There are some LED lights you can clip on the visor, they are cool. I got one at work. Yea, I know it's still cheap on such a $$ vehicle.

That was I thinking, as the Commander is available with the navigation system you shouldn't need maps at night much. So I don't think the perimeter lights would be considered "map lights", but instead "courtesy lights."

Sorry for the confusion. I just called them map lights. yes I have been using navs for years and i do not own any maps. BUT, I love the multitudu of lights around my Mercedes that come on and off in just the right ways. In the commander, I just want a light that will focus at my lap area WITHOUT lighting up the entire cabin. I hate the turning a light on in a room effect. Just my preference. By the way, my WJ Grand Cherokee (2000) had the dome lights that you are pointing out AND the map lights that I want.

:) See the number listed in my signature? Supposedly it is for consumers to make suggestions for improvements to DCX vehicles. You should call it and let them know your concerns. Maybe they will make changes to future models.

I can see where you're coming from. I'll never need a map in mine thanks to the nav, but at the same time, if my girlfriend flips on the "courtesy light" on the passenger side, it's definitely distracting...

Took a while to get used to the courtesy light placement, but now feels like it's in a very natural place to reach.

I don't mind the reach, I just hate not having a spot light on my lap without lighting up the entire car. Plus, there is room for it?? Hell if it is DC getting cheap, I'll pay to add it as an assessorie

I've been able to find many LED lights that will work. There are even some that can be permanently mounted with decent fit and finish, I just hate to mess up this pretty interior. Its really one of the trucks strengths. I really like the interior over the old WJ, but no map lights. Sigh!
