I have a 2006 Commander with a Hemi and the tow package. I pull a 17' bass boat and use a 6" drop hitch. My boat bounces WAY to much while I tow it. (My winch strap actually broke today from the force!!) Does anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?? Since the tail end is so hign, I've gone thru four hitch lengths continually dropping the ball lower to the ground with no luck. My last hitch dropped 7.5 inches and still nothing. I've pulled the boat with other trucks and this problem does not occur with any of them. Please help....

I think maybe you have to raise the tow ball. Check the tounge weight as well. You may need to even get a longer receiver.

I saw a show in the diy network about setting up for proper towing. Maybe you can search on that to get a proper answer.

Good luck and be safe.

Sounds like you are not getting the right combination for "tongue weight". You might need to get a weight distributing hitch setup to get it right...better in the long run anyway. You might even think about adding some airbags rear or air shocks rear.

I tow a 19' I/O with no issues. It weighs about 4000lbs loaded. Get out a level and see how level your load is. Make sure the front is not higher than the rear. It sounds like you're either still not dropped enough or have too much weight in the rear of the boat while towing. Do you keep your gear in the boat while it's being towed? If so, you might want to keep it in the vehicle or at the front of the boat and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info thus far. I called my local Jeep Dealership and they had no advise. Since the tail end of the Commander is very high, dropping the ball to make the boat trailer more horizontal seems to make more sense. I've been trying to duplicate the same scenario with my set-up as it is with the other vehicle that tows my boat. I see no visual difference with my current set-up as I do with the other vehicle, yet when I drive the Commander I get this horrible bounce and clunking noises, while the other vehicle is a very smooth ride. Any other suggestions would be great. If I figure it out, I will post again. Thank you to all.

I started with a 2" drop and it was real bad. Then I went to 4", then a 6" then a 7.5". It got a little better with each one, but frankly I'm sick of spending $20-$30 on a new hitch every time, and they are getting more expensive with each inch. I figured I'd start asking around before I go for the 10'' drop and blow $50. Thanks.

Have you looked at getting an adjustable hitch?

Yea CrzCajun, my last hitch is an adjustable down to 7.5". I don't like that one though because of the two piece set-up it rattles and also actually adds to the problem. Oh well, I'll try all the suggestions thus far and see if I can at least minimize it. Thanks.
