My Commander was built in the August timeframe and purchased in February. I noticed that the NAV system didn't quite understand some areas of newer development (well, not that new).

When I had it in for service, they said that new DVDs come out annually, in January and they are on back order. My DVD is from January 2005. They ordered a new one (and it is back ordered).

You would think, that Jeep would make sure that any Jeep bought after the next DVD became available, they would upgrade them to current maps. Sure, they are going to send me the DVD when they come in, "after I complained". I would have expected, current Nav DVD on any new car bought.

Anyway, anyone that has the Nav system and bought their Jeep this year, might want to check it out. At least be on the current DVD before you have to pay over $200 each in the following years.

CD/Nav unit replacement update

I forgot about this section  , so here's a repost. Our cd player started to do a continuous cd swich, constantly switching between cd's. Couldn't get the cd's out. Took it in, they had to replace the unit, and send the old one off to get the cd's out. Here's the update.

I finally got a call from the dealer to let us know our 4 cd's where here. It's been 2 months. We had 4 cd's in when the player screwed up. Got them back from a radio shop that I guess subs out for DC to get the cd's out of the units. They came back in good shape, no scratch's. The wife had just bought Rob Thomas's new cd. This cd in particular had a paper folded around it which said "Do not use this cd in the unit, it is too thick" It said something real close to that, I left the paperwork in the XK- too lazy to go get it right now . Then talking to my Jeep sales dude, He said a lot of the newer cd player are not playing the thicker cd's, and that they get jammed. I asked him if that was what caused my unit to screw up. He didn't really answer my question but he wasn't involved with the repair. He also said that some of the new units wont play cd's people burn on their PC. I'm going to research who makes the Nav/cd player in my XK and shoot they an email. Anyone else had problems, yet?

Re: CD/Nav unit replacement update

Alpine supposedly makes all of the DC head units - they absolutely do make the NAV head unit - their customer service number is listed in the Navigation manual.

One workaround for that CD - dupe it on to a CD-R.

Some are Alpine, and some are Siemens.

Navtech Update?

Anyone else gone on the NavTech website to check on an update for the Commander nav system? They don't list the Jeep as being one of their products. However, they do say if you don't see your make/model listed to call your dealer. I haven't called the dealer to see if there is an update for 2006 or if the disk we have is the most current.

Other than your dealer, check with Alpine---they are the OEM source.

Re: Navtech Update?

An update to my previous post. I contacted NavTech about an update and the possibility of inputing GPS coordinates. The NavTech response is as follows:

"While Jeep uses our map data on their navigation systems, we neither produce nor distribute the disks and thus have no details on the technical capabilities of the system. If you have a question that cannot be answered through the manual then we would suggest contacting Jeep directly. Their number is 1-800-992-1997 and they are open M-F 8:00AM-5:00PM."
I be calling Jeep to ask a few questions and will post the answers as I get them.

Here is the latest that I could find:

Database version #3:

February 15, 2006:
P/N 05064033AD
Database 05.0404.00.200521.0005
Software 02.30.00

http://www.wjjeeps.com/nav.htm

(scroll way down)

Even though the website is for the WJ it is the same DVD the XK system uses. It looks like a complete new database version (Version #3).

As is says on the website...Once you put a later version in the Nav radio...the firmware is automatically updated, and the older DVD disk will no longer work...

I checked with the local Jeep dealer...$300.00...I will wait awhile...

Re: Nav DVD

AD is the latest version, take the disc out and look at the part number on the label. The last two digits are AA, AB, AC or AD. Could be worse, I looked at some of the GM discs and they wanted $450 for an updated disc!

Re: CD/Nav unit replacement update

Has anyone opened up the dash to access the radio.? I am thinking of putting in the nav. unit in place of regular cd. I have seen them on ebay alot less then the dealer. I know I would need additional bezel, but was wondering what else I would be getting into. Any help would be appreciated

Nav DVD Version? Let's hear it!

Ok folks, let's heard it. What version of Nav DVD do you have for your Jeep commander. "AC" here.

Trying to find out what version is the latest as well. I think I have heard as far as AE. But definately AD.
