New member and new Commander owner with power steering issue

Hello! I’m a new member so I’m not sure if I’m doing this right. I’m also a new commander owner! I just recently bought a 2006 Commander limited with the 5.7 Hemi, and the other day when I turned it on and tried to drive away I had no power steering what so ever, turns out it blew a hose off, unsure of what exactly the hose is called but it comes from the rack and pinion and goes to the powersteering cooler. It’s blown off twice early in the morning when temps are about 35°. Having troubles finding the part because it has been discontinued. Is this line supposed to have such high pressure or is something else creating this issue?

I have not heard of this particular issue before but I wouldn't think a power steering line which is essentially doing nothing but circulating power steering fluid would be under that much pressure; I would speculate that the line is probably just extremely worn - or one of the fittings the line connects to is worn or damaged because that should definitely not be happening - even with the cooler temperatures. This could also possibly be related to some kind of malfunction of the power steering pump or the power steering cooler.

Maybe some of our resident mechanics that own Hemi-XK's can chime in with more detailed information on where to troubleshoot and what to check;

Your power steering system also feeds the hydraulic fan, so you definitely don't want this problem to continue.


There can be a lot of pressure in a power steering system; a typical modern car can run about 100 psi at idle. However, given that it's happening early in the morning, I'd guess you need new hoses; as hoses get older, they tend to get more brittle and lose their elasticity, and with colder temperatures all the mating surfaces will shrink to a point where an older hose might not be able to hang on anymore.

Did you get this fixed? I am having same problem, the aluminum fitting blew out of the cooler. Is there a fitting that needs to be replaced?
