I'm going to figure something out. I found the hinge, the T-Handle to secure it and all that. Just need to get my brother to use his talents or find somebody I trust. Don't laugh at the bad photo shop but this is my actual idea. Its using a few peoples plans and combines them. I like that Australian version for the under bumper support but their actual visible carrier is squarish and ugly. My idea uses their under bumper support idea and a typical carrier up top. I like the idea of mounting it on the top of the bumper to keep it close to the rear of the jeep. My personal opinion I don't like it when they are hanging way out there.

With the under side of the bumper like this

And copying this idea up top.

Of course accessories could be added after I got an idea of what type of space I would have.

If you decide to do this maybe you could take some measurements and photos along the way. Mainly the mounting points. It would allow us to maybe duplicate ourselves for those that are capable or have a shop duplicate for others.

Down2far - Well If I do make it or If I can get my brother to make it then I'll get some picture, measurements and all that. I am trying to convince him to make them so I can offer them on the forum.

Texel - You know that guy? That thing looks HUGE!

Make sure that it is far enough back for the window to clear the spare tire. The tire carrier that Ross has made in the past also have supports that tie into the frame under the carrier. If Ross is not making any more of them he might share his plans with you as a starting point.

I'm with you on that. That is why I haven't really cared for any of the ones that have been made so far. I don't care if it is close to the rear window because I hardly ever use it.

I agree with this style as well, the guy who will be making mine is going to remove the rear bumber and then build the tire rack into the replacement bumper to keep it up close. He will include the back up camera and back-up sensors into the new bumper. I just need a little more money saved up to pay for the job.

HueyPilotVN thanks for the good pictures and advice. Not knocking Ross's design or questioning anybody's opinions but personally I want my tire to hug the back window. Since I lifted it I really cant reach much through there anyway and that gap between the tire and the rear end drives me nuts but that's just me.

I have tossed around some ideas to use something similar to the H2/H3 carrier where it swings out and lowers but I really want to just get something done. Considering how often I get a flat I THINK I can handle that tire manually. At least I hope. Any idea what your tire/wheel weighs? I even thought about re-using that cable thing underneath to try and make a lowering mechanism. You could pull it up tight and bolt it back on. Just an idea though.

i've been playing with the idea of doing a rear bumper. but at this point in time. i could careless about building anything. i still like the south african rear bumper the best.

there is just so much crap under the plastic back there i would have to move it all to make my bumper high clearance enough to make me happy. there isn't much to bolt to back there either. sometimes i wish i had a range rover or a land cruiser because there is so much cool stuff out there for those.

my tire carrier is really close to the back of my commander.

i'll probably just do a rear-view camera someday. i don't really care about the backup sensors in mine.

i don't even have the tire carrier on mine. its been off for about 4 months. its nice to be able to open the rear hatch without having to swing that thing out of the way everytime. i think a roof-rack with gas can carriers would be a happier solution for me. and then some sort of rear bumper.

This tire is mounted on the hatch. EDIT: On second thought, it isn't mounted on the hatch. But I have seen a pic of one that was mounted on the hatch.

My new one will be similar to the one from South Africa.

i personally think mounting one to the hatch would be a bad idea. the sheet metal would not hold up very long.
I'm assuming that on the one I saw (wish I could remember where) that they put some heavy duty mounting plates or something inside the hatch.

i don't think the hinges would hold up either. just my opinion. i wish the rear hatch was actually a door like on the FJ Cruiser with a tire mount. that would have been really nice.

Lots of good ideas. Ross yours looks good with the gas cans behind the wheel, it fills that space that drives me nuts. I sometimes wish I have a vehicle with more available to, you cant beat the price on these mass produced bumper.

I like the South African bumper, they did I very nice job on that, I like how they cut the angles into the side near the wheel to optimize clearance. 49er what does he want to charge to build your bumper? I am in talks with a guy locally, no price yet.

Jeep5253, The hatch would be cool if everything supported the weight. Can you find them pictures? Man, wouldn't that be cool to completely change the way the hatch swings and reinforce it for a hatch mounted tire? Dreaming I know......

Sheet metal is not a good plact to mount anything. I had a Rubicon Rack on my TJ and the mounting on the rear door eventually tore the sheet metal even with a backing plate. Sheet metal will actually tear fairly easily if the mount is not kept tight all the time. That rack did not even have the spare tire mounted on it, just the two Blitz cans, a High Lift Jack and ocassionaly something in the basket.
