Had a question for the group. I need to get a new tire for my Jeep as it is about warn out. I suspect the previous owner had it on the front and had an alignment issue with it.

My thoughts were to replace that tire and have the spare tire put to use on the other rim as it has never been used which would give me essentially 2 new tires and 2 partially warn tires. Spare tire and rim don't have the tire monitoring system and the spare rim is different from the other 4 rims otherwise I would just pull the spare out from under the Jeep and mount it for free myself.

We have a limited with I think the QD2 transfer case. I know ideally that I should have all 4 tires with nearly the same tread-wear but that isn't exactly in the financial future. I could swing it on a credit card but don't want to if I don't have to.

How much tread-wear difference from front to rear tires is acceptable?

Thanks for the threads.

I Googled things as well and found a thread in a different forum that claims a 3% diff in circumference is what it was designed for.

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f197/tire-tread-depth-allowable-difference-when-buying-2-new-tires-953589/

Jeep is at home and I am at work so I had to look up the tire size at Tire rack. The stock tires have a diameter of 29.5 inches so the circumference should be 92.63 inches.

Assuming a 3% diff, 97% of that would be 89.85 inches in circumference so the allowable smaller diameter would be 28.6 inches. Even fully bald the stock Goodyears fall within the 3% allowable difference.

So I guess I learned more about the TC and in the process answered my own question. Thank you for the thread search.

I don't think you are right, but it's your transfer case. http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/showpost.php?p=113551&postcount=6
