I've just been speaking to an electrician from a large auto parts store in the UK (Halfords for those who didn't guess) about fitting a replacement radio with Apple Play to my 2007 Commander. The first thing he told me was that if he took out the old radio then I would lose my parking sensors as 'the parking sensors take their power from the steering wheel audio controls'.

Does this make sense to anyone?

That's a complete lie. Many of us have replaced our stock stereos and none have lost parking sensors. As far as I know, they're on a completely separate circuit and have no connection at all to the stereo circuits.

Yeah, that's what I thought... This forum has been great in terms of seeing how relatively simple the removal and installation part are. The tricky bit seems to be connecting the new unit to the existing car harness. I was already told by the same store that I would need a cable at £138 ($190 approx) to do this. That despite the fact that other UK owners seem to have paid much less than that. The worrying thing is that the guy today was their 'specialist', who should know better.....

My 2006, bought new in March 2007, has a little more than 32,000 miles.

There was a period over here that there seemed to be a number of low mileage Commanders around. We have mostly diesels and people maybe buy them to tow with and as a second car possibly? Mine came from Northern Ireland, where cars have to be tested for roadworthiness by law annually from two years old. They actually go to a government testing station and the results are all recorded. That means that from 2009 I have a record of the mileage at each test up to present. I bought it in August with 38k on it (I don't use it much either...). I really wanted the V8, and of course just after I bought mine there was a 2007 V8 with just 31k on it. Always the way!
Just fixing a few little glitches that come with age, and of course trying to bring the radio up to date with an Apple Play unit.

Your turbo diesel has more torque than the V8 though.

I have the mygig unit with HDD and navigation etc.

I did the same thing, but after seeing install kits with harnesses for almost $200 not including installation and the unit. I do believe the after market units also don't fit in the dash and need a bezel kit.

That was months ago so 8 could be wrong on my info.

Yes, the information I have gathered so far suggests that my double DIN Jeep unit isn't quite the same size as the double DIN aftermarket units and I need an extra piece of trim which isn't expansive, and an extra piece of wiring loom which connects the new radio to the existing harness and therefore keeps the steering wheel controls etc. If I could source the cable and knew I was buying the correct thing I would do it myself. I really went to the parts shop to get the benefit of experience, but have obviously been put right off that now!

I had a similar unit to yours in a Chrysler 300c and to be honest if it had Bluetooth and a USB or 3.5mm jack port I would probably be happy enough. I use Apple products though, so the Apple Play does appeal.

Just to note, there does seem to be some type of connection between the backup sensors and the stereo. My stereo mutes every time the sensors beep, which happens to be every time I put it in reverse because the system disables itself and I can't figure out why. I doubt removing the stereo would disconnect power to the sensors, but you would probably lose that mute feature.

There is a reverse gear signal that goes into the stereo harness. It's not connected to the parking sensors, as far as I know, but rather gets a signal from the reverse gear itself. You can bring this input into a new stereo, and use it to enable a backup camera or other features, depending on what the aftermarket stereo supports.

Plenty of us have done stereo installs and can tell you exactly what cables you'll need. I'd recommend the PAC Audio RP4-CH11. It comes with a harness to plug directly into the factory stereo connector, so you won't need to splice any factory wiring. You then wire that harness to the new head unit, which should be as easy as matching each wire on the harness to the corresponding wire on the head unit. They're all labeled in the user manuals, so it's very straightforward. Finally, the RP4-CH11 keeps your stereo controls enabled.

As far as the extra trim piece, there are plenty of options out there. I used a Metra trim adapter, which I absolutely hate, so you might check out other options. The Metra unit is a 2 piece unit, and the fit is very poor.

Thanks for this. The store I mentioned has a bit of a mixed reputation, when they're good they are very good, but...... Unfortunately there are very few local independent shops now where good advice can be found. I am happy enough to do the work, I just wanted pointing in the right direction. Thank goodness for this forum. I also seem to have solved my sunroof leak problem and fixed my non operational front electric windows last weekend!
