Gang, I searched but haven't found an answer.

In the cargo area, on the top side of each rear fender panel there are small cubbies with (on the passenger side) HVAC controls and cup holder, and (on the driver side) cup holders.

I looked at prying these up but chickened out  .

What I'm interested in is what lies underneath - does removing the panel on either side gain access to the outer fender?

The reason being, if I can gain access to the outer fender I can drill and mount a CB antenna through the body. I have no issue with drilling holes in the brand new Commander - it'll be a feature, not a bug :p .

Years ago on a YJ I mounted a ball mount and whip antenna, and the range of the CB was considerable. I think such an installation would look good, but need to gain access to the area before seriously looking at such a move.

Any help appreciated.

Jim

On the left hand side is the amp for the radio if you have the Boston Acoustics sysytem. On the right I'm guessing it would be all the rear heat/ac stuff.

Thanks for the reply.

No Boston :( , just cup holders. Not many options on my 08. Not that I'm complaining, I moved from a TJ X model. ;)

I need to find out (a) if the cupholders will pry out using flatblade w/o damage (or exactly how they do come out) and (b) assuming I get one out - goes it give me access to the outside fender.

The passenger side might be better, 'cause it's away from the fuel door, but either side would work.

I've set up a temp CB antenna (I'd like to have something for a highway run I'm doing on Thursday) but for the permanent install I'd like something that looks good and functions well.

The roof is out, too tall, but a fender mount might look O.K. and give good range.

The Boston I'll have to live without...but I'm rapidly becoming addicted to that Sirious radio!

use a flat blade around the edges of the cup holders and squeeze it together.
they pop right out. I just squeeze them by hand to take them out.

dont mount a cb to your bumper, you wont get any range cause your xk will block the signal.

cico7 - Thanks! I'll pull the holders and see if I can get the access I need. I'm running a temp install for Thursday, but need the permanent setup by Saturday a.m. if I can squeeze the time in. Understood on the bumper install - even on the TJ that was type of install was iffy, I ran the mount to the rear tail lamp. That gave pretty good performance with a 3 ft Firestik, but it was a soft top.

???

Don't know nuthin' 'bout no campin'...;)

Thursday I've got a quick dash (for a long day of meetings) to Lansing MI, then Saturday we head out on a week's vacation, starting in N/E Indiana. No real plans, just drivin' and stoppin' at whatever looks like fun. Herself wants to stop by Shipshewana Indiana, that's the only planned stop.

We're not much good at camping; I had enough of sleeping on the ground in the Army to last a lifetime. Roughing it is when room service stops before midnight ;) .

Where ya'll gonna be?
