Ugg..

I was detailing the Commando this weekend and noticed that I had, what appeared to be road tar spattered on the paint at the edge of the rear wheel well. Being curious, I looked closer and noticed that the first owner had rhino lined the wheel wells and what I saw was a bit of overspray....no biggy. I was pretty stoked that someone had done that honestly.

Then I decide to crawl under her and peek around. I have vision of a cat back exhaust so I wanted to see what would be involved.

While I'm under there, I glance back at the rear diff and was dismayed to see that it has obviously been leaking for some time and there was fluid on the bottom edge of the pumpkin cover.

I guess my question really isn't a question, but the rear diff should be sealed tight correct?

I am going to drain it this weekend and reseal the cover to see if that helps.

Are you certain the pinion seal is not leaking and lubricant is blowing back to the cover?
If the seal is OK you'll be fine by resealing the cover.
There is no acceptable leakage: (drips, seeping).
Wisping is acceptable and that is when you see dirt attaching to what appears to have been damp areas around seals and cover.
Wisping can be determined by the attached dirt seeming dry.
It's one of those things machines do that makes most mechanics just shrug their shoulders and say, thats the way it is.

Good luck,
Rob

If the diff was overfilled when it was serviced there would be some fluid leaking from the fill plug. Be sure that is not the source of the leak.

Im with robby. Id definately check to see if the leak is coming from the pinion seal.

Is there any damage to the bottom of the pumpkin or diff cover?

I will check all that this afternoon and let you know. I will also take some good pics and post them up for review.

Thanks for the input!
