So, I just recently changed out the oil in my differentials and was rather surprised/disappointed to see a rubber plug for the fill hole on the rear diff. What's up with that? Was Chrysler to cheap to put in a regular screw-in plug like in the front diff? Has anyone had any problems with leaking from it? What are the chances of pinching or puncturing it and losing oil? It just seems kinda cheesy to me.

Mine was leaking about 500 miles before I had them done again at 36K.. Of course the mechanic says it doesn't happen that often.

If the fluid is overfilled even by a drop it will leak out. Jeep has always used rubber plugs on their diffs. The D30 and D35 in my YJ both have rubber fill plugs. Their is the potential for damage on the trail but it is very minimal and I don't think they will just fall out. I usually can't get the plugs out when I want to.
