Ok so the Jeep I'm buying does not have a remote start. I'm trying to weight my options here, so help me out.

1. Stock remote start, is this even possible to add a remote start with the OEM key on a vehicle that was not equipped with one. I know I would have to upgrade key if its even possible. Plus the range is not so good, my moms car can only start from like 50 ft away.

2. Alarm/remote start. This is another way to go, however, it is not possible to get away from the stock key fob, right? So I would have the stock key plus the upgraded remote start and security which would be bulky.

3. I found this online http://www.viper.com/P-4203V/Viper-Responder-One-2-way-Remote-Start-System It clamis to have a 2k foot range, which my current remote start has, and it works well. With this option, the fob is the size of a silver dollar. So nice and small. What elese is needed for the install. Do you need a security bypass?

Opinions welcome, also let me know what you have and ease of installation and use!

Depends on how much you want to / willing to spend. I like to the idea of the OEM engineers being responsible for matching everything up, so I would go with Chryslers's unit. Here's a link http://performancedodge.stores.yahoo.net/jecorest1.html Here's what they say:

"Mopar has a fully integrated, OEM tested remote start system that allows you to start your vehicle from as far away as 800 feet with just the push of a button. Imagine starting and warming your vehicle from your place of work or home on cold winter days, or cooling the same vehicle on hot summer days. Mopar's Remote Start system is designed to work with your Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicle and interface seamlessly with your vehicle's electronic, security key."

I've never determined the farthest distance mine will start at but it is reasoanble and much further than 50'. You would need 2 items, the remote start and the install kit. Just under $300 for both.

P.S. Mine came with it but I hear they are pretty simple to diy.

From what I understand that is just a remote start with the jeep logo on it.

What year is your XK? There are different systems for 2006-2007 and 2008+ due to the different CAN BUS systems used. Either way, the installs are NOT plug and play, and need the computer tuned by the dealer to activate the start modules after installation.

I purchased an '06 without the remote start, I purchased an OEM aftermarket unit and installed it myself for a couple hundred dollars. It works off the original remote and you can start the car from something like 800 feet. Do yourself a favor and do the same.

No remote start is going to be "plug and play".

2 Things, you cant install a aftermarket remote start ie viper without having the pcm flashed?

Second, how can you use your factory remote to start the vehicle?

X2. I didn't install it myself but had the dealer do it as part of my purchase deal.

You learn something new here everyday. I thought the remote start option was called kids or the wife.

Good point, Huey. When I was a kid, I would fall all over myself if my mom or dad would hand me the keys and let me start it for them.

My 07 came with remote start and the range is decent, but I have to be directly within line of sight for it to start. In contrast, on my last Dodge, I installed the Mopar OEM kit (made by a company CodeSystems) and located the antenna underneath the rear view mirror mount. The range on it was awesome and I could start it from just about anywhere. It probably helped that the truck sat a few feet off the ground, but I think the external antenna made the difference. I like the idea of the OEM kit because mine came with several harnesses with connected inline with the factory wiring. I actually had to splice 3-4 wires if I recall and all of them were clearly labeled in the instructions.

Does anyone know the OEM part number to add on the remote start to my 06 commander? I would like to buy it from the dealership or online and install it myself is it is easy. I'm guessing I will have to get new key fobs, which is fine with me.

You will need two parts, I just checked my invoice but they did not include the parts numbers. I purchased mine from makeitmopar.com for $279.22.

The kit comes with an additional fob that you attach to your key ring instead of replacement keys.
