I have a 2006 Jeep Commander with approximately 112K as of this writing.

I've experienced the starting issues pretty much since I've owned the car (I bought it around 75K) and have just lived with it.

Typically speaking, they seem to occur right when I turn over another 1,000 miles (e.g. 100,000; 105,000; etc) -- then stops after a hundred miles or so (which leads me to believe the issue is electronic).

Well, I am at the point now where I am pretty much having to bump the starter (i.e. turn the ignition switch multiple times *every* time I start the car -- then it will eventually start).

This is what I've gathered from reading the many posts about this in this forum:

1. It seems like the Front Control Modules are faulty on the early Commanders -- and the culprit for starter and electrical problems (The oft-cited service bulletin: http://www.xkjeeps.com/TSB/tsb_xk_0806005.pdf)

2. Replacing the FCM can run about $1000. The part alone is $400 ish online. From what I've read, this always does not solve the problem

3. Replacing starters, in a sense, is like treating the symptom and not the disease (I hate that phrase, but it's an apt analogy)

So my questions....

1. Has anyone installed an FCM on their own -- or does it require some sort of reprogramming and/or ownership of a multifunction tool? Is it just a plug-and-play type of part? One concern about taking this to a mechanic or dealer is that they normally do not listen to you, fix what they think is wrong, then you're out that money if they do not fix it correctly

2. I am thinking about just replacing the starter (it seems to be a $100ish dollar part at my local autozone) to see if that will fix the starting issues for the time being

3. I assume a service bulletin is not the same as a recall -- so, at no point, is the manufacturer responsible for correcting this free of charge?

Any insight on the above -- has anyone been able to fix this issue themselves and resolve it?

I thought most starter problems were dirty, corroded cables on the starter, ground and battery?
Certainly a place to start (pun intended)

Good point. I was thinking that I should check and clean my contacts before incurring the time and expense of replacing the starter. I had similar results a few months back when I cleaned the ECM for my transmission -- and avoided having to unnecessarily replace a $400 part that just needed to be cleaned.

There is a issue specific to at least the early Commanders, mine is a 2006 and I think the build date was late 2005, with the starter not engaging from time to time and having to turn the key sometimes as many as 200 times to get it to start. It seems to be traced to faulty FCMs that were used in the early models.

You make a good point -- start with the basics first. I'll let everyone know how I fare. At 112K, it could probably benefit from cleaning the contacts.

My 06 in 06 after 3 starter replacements was solved by replacing the wiring harness. No problems since. Note my FL location. No road salt.
