About 4 weeks about I ordered a set of Rock Rails from Trail-Gear Inc.

The company doesn't make them specifically for the Commander so the length would have to be adjusted by me. Since the 66" set would be too short I order there 78" set. The 78's are on sale for $99 bringing the total cost to $151.67 with shipping. The cost of the tubing would be around $45 and the main rails come fully assembled and welded. The only thing I needed to do was cut to length, find mounting points and start welding.

Since the only thing missing from my garage is the welder (it was stolen 2 years ago from my brothers garage) I mooch off a good friend of mine, Plus he's an old school retired pipefitter. I decided I wanted the main beam directly below the pinch weld under the rocker for main support. I used the existing 6 holes to bolt 1/4" plates to then lined the rails up and tacked them in place. We removed the rails and fully welded the tabs in place. Reinstalled the rails and cut the legs to fit. The finally step was welding them directly to the subframe.

I really didn't want to weld to the subframe, but I was running out of time since we're leaving on Friday for Colorado. When I purchased the rails I forgot to get the leg mounts. If you decide to order these, I suggest getting them. They can be wleded to the subframe making the rock rails fully bolt on and replaceable if damaged. I will order the leg mounts when I return from Colorado and finish the job the correct way.

The rails are 1035 DOM tubing. 1 3/4" x .120 wall. [email protected] came over last night to help install my Rusty's spacers and help with a few other things (Read: Keeping me focused on the task at hand) Since I don't have any rocks to test on and the website claims how strong they are we decided to slip the floorjack under the outer rail and lift the wheels off the ground. We took an initial measurement and much to our surprise under full lift the rails moved less than 1/16th of an inch!

Sorry no pics of the fitting process, but here they are installed. I plan to coat them with brush on bedliner while I'm Colorado. Thanks to [email protected] and my friend RICHARD (He hates being called Richard, but it won't let me use D*&^) for helping me prep for Camp Colorado.

They look great. How much trimming did you have to do to make it fit?
I took 8 inches out of the middle. The legs needed about 4 inches knocked off. From the time I layed them on the ground to install was under 3 hours.

I'm not putting my blessings on these until I see how they handle Colorado. I intend to put them to a serious test. That is also another reason I'm not painting them right now.

I'll send some pics during Camp Colorado.

That looks really good. Do you think it would have been possible to make brackets to mount them to the "frame" instead of welding? Are they supported by the pinch weld area or do they just rely on the "frame" mount?

Trail gear sells leg mounts or I could've made my own mounts with more time, but I procrastinated for the last 3 weeks. You know what I mean. They are fastened to the pinch weld in 6 spots with grade 8 hardware. The legs are more for lateral support and upward twisting.

Looks good, and can't wait for photos from you "testing" your new sliders/Rails.

Maybe you can talk with Trail-Gear so they can start to produce them they way you modified yours then other XK owners can get them and benefit from your hard work:). $150 shipped is a great price, do you know how much they are regular price?

There 58"'s run $135 and the 67"s run $140, so using that I'd guess about $145 to $150. Shipping was $52.67 from Cali to Ohio. The box was just over 70 lbs.

They sell the 8 leg mounting kit for $24. Not much to it.

The mod I would make is to weld a plate to the frame with a solid rod that the leg would slip onto. Then you could bolt the leg to the plate and pinch welds making it a removable system.

Thanks Tymac for this thread I was thinking about doing saomething similar and looking for a cheap pair or sliders....

I will bring whats left of my gallon of bed liner in case we need to touch up after the trails.

It looks like I know where im buying my rock sliders from. The 67" ones will work perfect for me since Im trimming both the front and rear fender flares. Also mine will be mounted a little differently since I dont have the black plastic rocker guard on my XK. Im going to drill holes through the pinch weld and have the legs go through the hole in the pinch weld and then weld to the frame. Then I can also weld the leg right to the pinch weld for extra strength. I also wont have to angle mine downwards like you had to so I will get more protection. Obviously the pinch weld will still be exposed but im not to worried about them.

you guys should plate your frame where you attach the tubing to. that will spread the load and keep the weld from tearing the frame. i tore the frame on my old toyota with a set of shock hoops i welded on. it wasn't hard to fix, but alittle frustrating having to drive home without any shocks.

looks really good. those guys sell a lot of stuff.

Good idea. I never though about that. Then if you wanted, you could also add a bolt or two into the frame for extra strength. I know its not needed but I have seen many rock rails that are bolted and welded on the frame.

i welded mine to the "frame" and pinch weld. if the guards go, my commander is going to be totaled. no need to take them off. i used .120 wall 1.75" round tubing. i used 4x4x.25 steel plates on the "frame" to weld my tubes to.

Plus I'm bringing another door prize, a Marson Klik 48000 plastic rivet gun and a full box of rivets. Hopefully we don't need it!

I definately plan on plating the frame when I get back. I should've taken more time, but I am the original procrastinator. Besides I was told there arn't that many rocks were we're going. :rofl:

The owner of On Off Road 4 Wheel Drive has his pinch welds arched and the tubes welded to it and the frame. He has a 02' Grand Cherokee.
