Just got back from a solo camping trip. Took the Commander on the Fish Canyon Escape Trail in the Slate Mountains. My guidebook (Guide To Southern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails) rated it as easy, but the dry wash at the end was very rocky and slow going. My Commander is not lifted and I didn't hit anything, so it probably is easy. Used 4-low only on a few steep climbs and descents, not in the wash. Great time. My trail ended at the start of Goler Wash, which leads to Barker Ranch, Charles Manson's hangout and the location of his arrest. Really want to do that trip, but it was way too late in the day to consider it. Especially solo, especially during the week. You know, discretion is the better part of valor. For those of you not familiar with the area, I started just north of Trona, CA, crossed the mountains, and ended up about 15 miles south of Ballarat, CA.

Also will post pics of the ghost town Bodie (we named my son after it) and Bald Mountain Lookout. The roads to these locations are 2WD high-clearance gravel or dirt. Bodie is north of Lee Vining, CA, and Bald Mountain is between Mammoth Lakes, CA, and June Lake, CA.

That is not my soft drink cup, but I picked it up.

These are the Panamint Mountains

Bald Mountain Lookout. That's Mono Lake in the distance.

Bald Mountain. There was a warming hut by the lookout. I'll have to come back snowmobiling this winter.

Fantastic. I saw a documentary on that area that Charles Manson was captured in. Very cool that you were out that way.

That "town" looks pretty cool, esp. the B&W. Makes it look like an antique postcard... Thanks for sharing!

I’m from that area - other side of 108/Sonora pass. Love Bodie.
Thank you for sharing. Just the motivation I needed to take a trip back home🖤

RBLAPHAM... Yes. Some of us have not owned our commanders since 2008 and therefore are new to the forum. The photos he posted are still visible and I because I appreciate seeing them I responded. It really doesn’t matter to me how old the post is or even if the original poster is still active here. There is a lot of useful information, even from 2008, on this forum so when I see something that helps or inspires me then I like to post a reply. For the most part the age of the post I’m responding to (even photo props) does not matter if the content is helpful. 😉

@LunaSea831 I think he was just letting you know not to expect a reply from EasternSierraMarc because he has not been active here since 2012.
