The Hemi Mystery

I have an 06 commander with the 5.7. In 17 years I have had no problems with it... Love it! A few months ago I had a hot smell from under the hood and found that the valve cover gaskets were leaking. So I took it to a shop to have them fixed. After getting it back I get a gas cap warning. Took it back and they scanned it and said I needed a new egr valve and rear canister. I replaced both. Still the same gas cap warning. So... Here is where the real problem comes in. I dont drive it all the time, 3 or 4 days a week, short trips. Once the jeep gets warm and I shut it down. 10 or 15 minutes later start it back up. Idles fine. Take off and about 50 ft or about 2500 rpm I have no throttle. It goes to an idle and the throttle light comes on (Codes p0344). Shut it down and start it again. same thing. When it cools down completely and I run it it is fine.

After replacing the Camshaft and Crankshaft position sensors it does that same thing. Took it to a different shop and they said one of the valve covers was still leaking and that the Camshaft Sensor was bad and my transmission lines to the oils cooler needed replaced. They replaced it. Same thing happens. Runs fine at first, gets up to temp and runs fine. Shut it off for a few minutes. Start it up and the same issue. No throttle when shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

Another guy stops to help me and runs a high end scanner and says he believes it is the throttle body. I replaced that. Went through the relearning process. Again... Ran great up to temp. Shut it off for a few minutes to restart and the same thing. Except now I get a P0016 and a P0344 code. and the idle is horrible and the engine is shuttering.

I am at a loss as to what to do. Any wisdom from the group?

@dlong-commander ;

Welcome to the forum; I created a signature for you.

First suggestion - silly as it may sound, replace your gas cap, with a new, factory OEM gas cap.

Your gas cap not sealing properly, will cause you to lose fuel line pressure, which can create a host of odd symptoms/problems.

Beyond that, I would look up your other DTC's below and follow the possible causes & trouble-shooting guidance that it gives you, for the codes that you're receiving currently.

as blue states, start simple and make sure you are replacing anything with OEM parts. after the gas cap, i'd start with cleaning connections with deox or other contact cleaner, at the cam sensor and at the PCM. I may also use one of those infrared thermometers to check the temp of the PCM when you have the issue. that may be the next on your parts cannon journey. they are known to fail

@dlong-commander The TPS (Throttle Postion Sensor) may need replacing.
I first replaced the gas cap with one from Autozone. Then I bought one from the dealership. The TPS is a non replaceable sensor. It is part of the throttle Body... Replaced... I did not clean the connectors yet. I will do that this weekend.

Have you tried a hard reset of the PCM recently?

And again, I'd recommend looking up your current DTC's below and go through the list of "possible causes" one by one & then follow the trouble-shooting guidance that it gives you.

As in disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes then yes.
As in disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes then yes.
Yes, that's what I was referring to.
The PCM is located where it gets a lot of heat off the exhaust manifold, why I am thinking if its a bad solder joint in there the heat may be the issue.. I may start by swap out the cam sensor for an OEM if it is not already, I have had a number of sensors purchased at local shops be bad out of the box,
I am thinking of getting the OEM this weekend and try that. I hope it is not the PCM

@dlong-commander ;

Just in case:

Thanks... Sucked it up and taking to the dealership Wednesday to have them diagnose the problem. I cleaned all connections today and rewrapped all wiring. I am at a loss. the jeep is in incredible condition and hate to have it not run. I think now it is an obsession.

Well it sounds like you should cut your losses and sell it to me lol. My wife has the same as yours and we live it. Want another newer one now. She had newer cars and payments to go with them and we finally said enough. My recommendation is build a relationship with ONE shop instead of taking it to different people all the time. It's hard to make progress if you start over every time. As a tech and a chrysler owner, sometimes you have to revisit issues and take them one step at a time.
@dlong-commander I have no avenues of where to look for your issue, so Im just here to cheer you up!

I have had my xk for 2 years and love it! I know that’s change in comparison to 17 yrs. So I can def see the love you have for it.

I see these vehicles becoming the next classic suvs from a long gone era.
