Jeep, an Obama favorite, looks to shift production to China
OCT. 25, 2012

Jeep Wrangler behind the president as seen in his new second term agenda binder.
In another potential blow for the president's Ohio reelection campaign, Jeep, the rugged brand President Obama once said symbolized American freedom, is considering giving up on the United States and shifting production to China.

Such a move would crash the economy in towns like Toledo, Ohio, where Jeeps are made and supplied, and rob the community of the economic security they thought Obama's auto bailout assured them.

Obama is such a fan of Jeep that he included a picture of himself speaking at the Toledo plant in his newly released second term agenda binder. In his address to the plant in 2011, Obama said, "I just took a short tour of the plant and watched some of you putting the finishing touches on the Wrangler. Now, as somebody reminded, I need to call it the 'iconic' Wrangler. And that's appropriate because when you think about what Wrangler has always symbolized. It symbolized freedom, adventure, hitting the open road, never looking back."

Well it appears that the taxpayer bailed-out Chrysler is looking back and now considering cutting costs by shifting production of all Jeeps to China, which has a strong desire for Jeeps.

In a Bloomberg interview, Jeep's president said the automaker plans to restore Jeep production in China, suspended in 2009, and is considering making all Jeeps in China. "Fiat SpA, majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers' operations in the region," reported the business wire service.

Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia and president of the Jeep brand, told Bloomberg, "We're reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity" as well as "should we be localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio" to China.

Chrysler builds Jeep SUV models at plants in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Manley said the firm is in talks with China's Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

Jeep production is staying in the United States, but Chrysler is considering building a full line of Jeeps in China as well, for the local market. Chinese trade policy imposes extremely high taxes on imported cars, making the sale of US-made Jeeps in China extremely difficult.

In the 1980s and 1990s, a joint venture, Beijing Jeep, was successful with their line of Chinese-built Jeeps. After Daimler took over Chrysler, they also took over the joint venture, which now builds Mercedes for the local market.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, last night, took a report from political blogs and repeated it to a crowd of people, claiming that Chrysler planned to shift production from the US to China. The original Bloomberg story merely stated that Jeep “may eventually make all of its models” in China — but also carefully noted that production would not be moved from the United States. The blogs did not report on that aspect of the original article.

Romney’s father famously ran American Motors, which purchased Jeep from Kaiser and was later purchased, with Jeep, by Chrysler. His campaign did not respond to followup queries, but a Chrysler spokesman stated that Jeep had no intention of transferring any production to China.

Cerberus leaders had reportedly tried to sell Chrysler to Chinese automakers, without success, during the brief period when Cerberus owned the company.

It is false. What Jeep ment was they are considering a plant in China for Chinese consumers only. No U.S.A. plants are closing. Romney will lie about anything. On a high note, the following pictures were taken at a Detroit gas station. A stretched JK with third row seats. It is wearing a manufacturers plate. It is rumured to be called Jk six pack.

Romney didn't lie about this. He merely repeated what had been reported.

If you repeat a lie it is still a lie!
It's only a lie if a person knows he is spreading falsehoods, otherwise, it's a misstatement. Anyway, the really important thing here is that Jeeps will not be made exclusively by Chicoms and I won't have to buy parts for Large Marge in perpetuity because I would ride an ox cart before I buy a Chicom Jeep.

Now reports are surfacing that Fiat wants to shift Jeep production to Italy, then others are saying it is to augment U.S. production, not to replace it. Confused?? I say that all confusion will clear up after next Tuesday.

Jeep XJ Imported from Mexico?? or, Drug Smuggling gone wrong...
Ha! I saw that. What could have possessed someone to try such a bone-headed scheme? The view from behind the wheel at the top must have induced pucker factor ten. That's bit of hard-core wheeling, though. Moab has nothing on this obstacle. What would be a good name for it?

I read that FIAT was considering moving production to Italy for Jeep stating that mfg cost reduction may be cheaper to build in Italy and export to the US. I HIGHLY doubt that it is cheaper to build anywhere in Europe but they may be looking at it from the pensions alone. I can't recall which publication it was but it explicitly clarified Jeeps for the Euro/US markets, not just European.
