I've got 49K miles on my stock Forteras, and will need to replace in teh next 4-5K miles. Like most of you want to upsize a bit, but wont be doing anything other than Robby's 1/2" leveling spacer.

I'd like to go 265 65's but based on what I have read here it will be too wide, so am looking at a 255 65 or 255 70.

The tire I am looking at is Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10. I know you guys are guru's I'm just a dumb grunt with this stuff. Thanks!

I just ordered a set of these today, so hoping they'll be good. I Googled them and a lot of people have posted about them on other vehicle forums similar to this one and have had good reviews. So I'm confident I'm going to like what I'm getting. I went with the 265/70/17... but am prepared to do some banging on a pinch weld if necessary.

Regarding the tire sizes you are considering, here's a copy of part of the guideline that 07JeepXK put together as a sticky. You will want to pick a tire size in the first list unless you add a 2 inch lift.

Stock Jeep Commanders or Commanders using the 1/4" leveling spacer can fit the following tire sizes WITHOUT wheel spacers and no rubbing:

245/65R17 (Stock Tire Size)
245/70R17
245/75R17 BFGoodrich All Terrians (might have minor rubbing)
255/65R17

Jeep Commanders ranging from the 2" spacer lifts to the 3.5 Rock Krawler kit can fit the following tires WITHOUT wheel spacers and no rubbing:

245/65R17 (Stock Tire Size)
245/70R17
245/75R17
255/65R17
255/70R17

yea, i didn't think 255/70's would fit on your setup. I've heard nothing but good things about those tires, though. you should do fine w/them (just might need to get a smaller size).

I bought a set of the Hankooks from the local Discount Tire this past weekend with a $100 rebate (Discount Tire promo) and am looking to get them installed next Monday. I could probably have gotten another 3K out of the stock tires, but the promo offsets that nicely. Even though I'm only a 4x2 I'm often on forest service roads and in pastures and I think these will do me good.

Can't comment on upsizing because I have not really considered it - I went with the stock size. Just wanted to join the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 backslapping party. :)

Great choice for an excellent tire $ for $. As for size, GPinthemitten has it straight. For such a big vehicle Jeep certainly didn't leave much room for bigger tires with out some modification.

Bulldog9, Don't get the 255/70's if you are not doing a lift. Of the two you mentioned, I recommend the 255/65/17's.

I hope your lifted because that tire size definately wont fit without a 2 inch spacer lift.

I just recently replaced my fortera's @ 43K, I was right at the wear bars when I replaced them. Bought a set of wrangler silent armors. GREAT TIRES. Smooth, quiet, sticky. I was having problems with the front end wandering in 1-2" snow. With the new tires, I have had ABSOLUTELY no problems. I am super happy with the purchase. I can't really lose traction anymore, even with TC off. Highly recommend the silent armors.

I like my 255/70's. They look ''right'' as in the amount of rubber wrapped around the rims. So... a 17'' wheel with the ''normal'' amount of surrounding rubber doesn't look that big until you park next to something else, then they suddenly look HUGE.

It isn't just me either, everyone that ever gets in the Jeep notices the much nicer ride. It should, it gained just under 2'' in diameter and a 1/2'' width.

But... I do have a 2.25'' Rocky Road lift. They haven't rubbed, but I doubt stock height could get by with that.

On edit... one thing about bigger tires, there's a lot more choice. 245/65R17 doesn't leave much else other than highway treads. You can get serious log-truck-whining meat grinders with the larger tire size. My Cooper ATR's are middle ground, about as meaty as you can get without howling on the highway. :)

Those tires look great. How did you go with the spare? I have a tow bar and I am not sure the 255/70 will fit in the spare tire location.
