Hello everyone! New here. Just picked up an 06 Commander with the 4.7L in it. Plan was to use it to tow our 21 foot boat around, but I came up with another idea as well! My question is, does anyone here use theirs to tow their SWB(TJ,YJ,CJ) JEEP around on a trailer? I am looking at trailers they weigh less than 1800lbs, and a TJ should be around 4000lbs, so I am close to the 6500Lb limit of the XK.

Just looking for some real world experience, I did some searching on here and didn't find much talk about it.

Oh any by the way, we love our new Commander, after having 16 Jeeps in my time, everything from CJ's, YJ's, Xj's, and two Rubicons, there is no way this thing is a Jeep, it rides too nice!!!! :D

Welcome..several here have towed a Jeep and should pipe in. Enjoy the ride!!

Welcome to the boards, and congrats on the new purchase. I'm kinda curious what kind of experience people have with towing other vehicles too, so thanks for putting this up.

You have asked the right person!

I recently made my maiden voyage towing my TJ on a 14' car trailer.

i have a HEMI.

Let me give some backround to back up my opinion, I just came from a 2003 GMC Duramax Diesel Crew Cab. (what some call the ultimate tow vehcile!) I am an experienced tower. I recently used to tow my 39' foor Camper around until we parked it at an RV Park. I have also towed my TJ for about 4 years.

Here is what I experienced:

GOOD POINTS:
1. towed fine up hill. ( I was suprised)
2. I was able to hold about 68 MPH with cruise with out if "fishing" gears.
3. The auto stick combined with the Tow/Haul mode made for superior down hill control.
4. I was able to correct easily if I got a little "off track".
5 No overbearing swaying on the highway. I thought the weight of the TJ and trailer would have pushed it all over the road. IT DID NOT.

BAD POINTS:
1. While not really a bad point YOU MUST HAVE A BRAKE CONTROLLER. I noticed when I had the controller turned down and before I got used to using the auto stick down hill, the brakes did heat up.
2. Not much I can say bad.

I had recently followed a 4.7 XK towing a TJ on a trailer across PA. He was towing a TJ on a 15 ' car trailer. It did fine. I still had my truck at the time and this trip sold the Commander to me. I figured if I got a HEMI, it would be fine and it IS.

I know you already have a 4.7 and I am not way knocking it but you will be fine. This guy said he wishes he bought a HEMI but he is not displeased at to trade up.

I only tow now approx 6-8 times year and this vehicle will suit me fine for my now changed towing needs.

So far I have only flat-towed my YJ with my XK. I did very well and I was surprised with the stopping power. I look forward to towing with my trailer soon and I will report back with the results.

I've flat towed my Bronco II, and it towed fine as well. No issues with the 4.7 or controlling the BII.

i've flat towed my TJ around town just fine, i recently put a 5.5" long arm on the TJ and now it tries to sway the commander's rear a little bit @ 70 mph.

i have a 06 with the 4.7 4x4.

i think youll be fine but your mpg are gonna drop.

I've flat towed the wifes TJ and there was quite a bit of sway going 55 mph+. I'm sure flat Texas, wind speeds and big rigs passing me helped contribute though.
