Transfer case issues?

169 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  donmcdonald
Hello, new to the site, have a 2008 Jeep Commander Sport. Jeep stopped working in January, while driving it just stopped moving anywhere! Was like I shifted it into nuetral! I could use 4low, but would not move other than that! I replaced the transfer case with a rebuilt unit, ran for about 200 miles and then the same damn issue, would not move, except in 4low! I have replaced the transfer case drive motor and am now looking at the TCCM(transfer case computer module) under the rear seat! Has anyone else had this issue? Very frustrated at this point! Thanks

Since you & I have the same model year, powertrain & 4WD System, I figured I would chime in here, not that it will help you much.

1st thing I would ask you is if you're receiving any DTC's in the EVIC or, any service 4WD system MILs?

I had the lower actuator motor on my transfer case go bad, but, that problem left me stuck in 4-HIGH and I couldn't drop down into 4-LOW and I was getting the "Service 4WD System" MIL.

Fun fact, our transfer cases have 2 actuator motors on them, an upper & a lower and they are known to be a common point of failure.

But I'll be honest with you, your problem sounds like its something different, but, I would think you should still be getting some Diagnostic Trouble Codes or Malfunction Indicator Lamps in the EVIC.

One other thing you may want to look at as a potential cause is, your FDCM - Final Drive Control Module.

i'd start by checking the trans fluid level. if you are not moving at all, the issue may be upstream from the t-case. I've read of folks running them dry and they still move... right up until the chain fails.. then its nothing...

Thanks for your input! I installed a remanufactured transfer case from the Gear Shop! They required me to use the Mopar transfer case fluid to keep warranty in effect. Made sure it was full on installation. Transmission also full, changed the fluid and filters.

Thanks for your reply, unlike most other posts and information I have found, I can use 4low, just cannot move anywhere in 4high! Both times this has happened, I swear in was like putting the Jeep in neutral! When issues occurred, no messages came up at all! Now that I have installed the remanufactured transfer case and replaced the lower transfer case motor, I now get a “Service four wheel drive system” message. Have had it hooked up to a scanner and tried to reset everything, no luck! I am now looking at the TCCM under rear seat, where is the FDCM or is that the same one? Unfortunately, I live 100 miles from a decent shop who could help me diagnose the issue! I have been relying on my mechanic buddy who works on all types of vehicles, we cannot figure out what the actual problem is! If I knew, I would order the part and be done with it!

Did you ever have the P73 campaign completed?

Since you're now receiving the Service 4WD system MIL, you may just need to have your FDCM reflashed at a Jeep/Chrysler dealership.

After entering my vin, printed report and all I see is a recall #P57 in 2014 and a N23, reflash of the FDCM in 2013. Both state they have been repaired. No mention of P73 campaign! I will call my local (100 miles away) dealer tomorrow and ask! My problem is Jeep won’t drive, will have to haul it to them! But if this is the issue, will be worth the cost and time. Thanks

Update: I called to check on the P73 campaign, according to records the fix was ran in 2016 on my Jeep! So now I’m stumped! when I installed the remanufactured transfer case, the Jeep ran great for approximately 200 miles and then had the same failure as before, just lost all gear selection, just as before, like transmission/transfer case was in neutral! No lights/messages in the dash! As stated before, I replaced the transfer case selector motor and have had it hooked to a scanner, reset codes. Still no fix! I can buy a new FDCM, but my fear is after spending approximately $600.00 on this module, it does not work and I’m out the money because there is no returns on electrical parts! Any suggestions you may have are appreciated!
Sounds like a possible electrical connection problem. Double check the connections to the transfer case that you touched when you replaced it.

Thanks for your response. Only has a single plug, have checked the wires going in and out! Wish there was a way of checking the FDCM? Dealer just wants to pull the codes, don’t really have an answer to the problem! Very frustrated!
