Hi all,

The Transmission is causing me problems....this is what happens....

Upon start-up from cold (After all–day/all night standing), the RPM flares up and remains static at circa 900-950RPM (usually circa 600RP)

Selection of either drive / reverse is followed by a delayed gear selection (Circa 2-3 seconds)….followed by transmission knock!

Upon drive, transmission hesitation in changing up process (Looking for gears). Out of sync with the normal gear selection that I’ve experienced since new.

After 100 yards, come to stop at lights, whilst depressing foot brake whilst stationary ‘an evident shudder’ can be felt through the pedals and chassis. This lasts approx 20-25 seconds.

Following the ‘Shudder’, and upon pulling away and accelerating ‘NO POWER’ or gear change can be achieved (1st Gear only). The car remains in first gear (slow), unless deceleration and then acceleration is applied.

Transmission knock always follows this process.

On hill starts, gear selection is only reached after a short and noisy burst of automatic Gear Crunching!

Once warm, gear selection improves, however gear selection hesitation and failure to select the appropriate gears is apparent and potentially unsafe. Shudder does not re-appear when hot/warm, however poor gear selections is always apparent.

Kick down is usually followed by a huge transmission knock, this is at circa 50mph, on uphill stretches.

No warnings have been evident on the Commanders Computer System.
Comments from Jeep in Manchester – Incorrect transmission fluid levels further warranty work (Leak due to faulty plug), carried out on last service (2000mls / 2weeks ago).

Or

Moisture within the transmission system due to identified plug leak. Condensation builds and contaminates the fluid – requires flushing 3No times! Moisture is known to cause transmission shudder.

Got any ideas fellas!!??

I think my Mercedes Dealer has finally failed to give that famous perfect service! :p

there is a TSB on this issue. contact your jeep dealer and have it fixed.

you have the warrenty still. right?

you will probably need a new transmisison at worst. its probably just low on transmission fluid.

she's in now with a small number of technicians climbing around and scratching their heads!

The warrenty is still valid, and they are looking to update some software.

Like you, I think its lack of transmission fluid

She's back!

Only the cold morning start-up will indentify if she's well again!

New transmission fluid and software flash updates on the transmission and engine modules have been carried out.

Can't wait to get the performance back!

The technician did say however thats he's glad not to have had to remove gearbox as they're a 'bitch of a complicated lump of Merc Egineering'.

Oh to have faith in our dealers! And my dealer is a Merc / Jeep Dealer!!!

Update to follow in 24hrs

Si

Ah! my error. We call them ...Mercedes....locally...central Ohio that is.
Ford has the Mercury (or had) line. There was a Mercury / Comet dealer here until just a couple years. I dont know when they stopped making the Comet, but the store was still there and was the only Mercury only store for a long time. The office, showroom and repair shop shared the some room.

Got a whole new gearbox fitted today with compliments from Mercedes. :)

They said it was quicker to replace the unit rather than try and repair the most complex gearbox they have ever made!

They also tell me thats its a similar box to that fitted in the SL55 AMG!

Now I see why these things are so fast. :D

Have a good one fellas!
