Has anyone seen or done the old skinnys on the XK?
I was thinking about tracking down some old black steel rims and a 235/85/17 style tire. Going for the old Defender look.
Has anyone done it?

Oh no.....wouldn't, couldn't, shouldn't....not appealing at all, no matter what vehicle you put them on.

I can dig it... But then again, back in Houston in the late 2000s', I probably had the only jeep grand cherokee on Swanga's anywhere in town and thought it was the coolest **** ever.

It looks great on the old defenders, but wouldn't match the commander's styling IMO, plus your current wheels are already pretty sick on their own! Also, I heard from many old techs how much those defenders were absolutely HATED. You might trigger some old memories from certain people 😅

Lol. I visited South Africa for a month back in the early 2000s and I rented a d90 for a week. As soon as I bought this thing I put those new Rubicon Gladiator rims on and really really like it. They are also functional because they are super easy to clean. Now I'm starting to see more and more of them and I always like to have a bit of an original truck. I was thinking black steelies and half moon hubcaps...lol. But then again I'm a bit of an idiot...lol

I agree with your plans @Fred Zeplon. Before I even knew about Commanders, I would see them in the streets and thought they were just another G-Wagen. That is until one day while waiting in line I saw that they were Jeeps indeed.

Anyhow Ive always related them to the old Defenders and cannot see past the similarities with the exception of the wheels. I understand bigger and better is today’s mantra, but Im also a fashion vs function type of guy. With that said, I am completely for skinnys aka pizza cutters as some call it. I think it deviates from the popular look of today’s suvs and makes it more original both for form and function.

So if someone thinks putting on some 235 is a silly idea, well that’s on them. I eat my pizza with ketchup and Im ok with it cause it makes ME happy.

Ive come across some steel wheels that are very basic in design. If I am correct, one of the newer jeeps comes stock with mud tires and plain black steelies. Ive seen the sets in sale thru offerup/craigslist/facebook marketplace.

Personally I am running stock 245s with 1.5 spacers and they sit flush with the fenders and create the perfect look imo. Il just waiting for them to wear out so I can upgrade to a bigger diameter. Problem is that all these 235s in 80+ sidewall tend to run a bit high in price when compared to more popular sizes such as the 265/70r17.

Absolutely. I guess because the demand is low for the pizza cutters is why they run expensive!? I also had a 1969 FJ40 and always liked the skinny look on those. It is definitely a personal thing...but I like em! Cheers!

lol. Not going to lie but it looks like a tractor.

Ive dwelt into pros and cons of wide vs skinny tires. I guess it comes down to whatever works best for you.
