Question about front differential capacity on refill

I'm doing a complete drain and refill of the driveline fluids on my 2008 Commander. It's parked level in my garage and I opened the drain plug several hours to let it drain. Anyway, I filled it and it only took about 1.25 quarts before it started coming out the fill hole. I moved the bottle pump tube to make sure it wasn't a false reading but even after more pumping it just gushed out faster. Most references say that a drain and fill should be able about 1.5 quarts. I'm not sure if that's typical or not, but I'm not sure what to do. I've never had a differential fill so far from what I expected.

maybe it takes 1.5qt when you fill after removing the cover. i just changed mine. i used a gallon jug of fluid so i did get an exact capacity.

Pulling the drain plug won't get all the fluid out, so it's pretty reasonable that 1/4 quart would be left in the diff.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. I assumed the total amount of from the drain plug would be 1.5 quarts. My garage has a floor drain and the Jeep might not be pulled in quite far enough, so I might check again after I pull it in further. That might also explain why the NV245 didn't weep out the fill hole after putting all 2 quarts of the Mopar fluid in. Strangely, I pulled out almost 2.5 quarts, which is far above specified capacity.

Admittedly, I did touch on this in an earlier thread, but I feel like I haven't really gotten a concrete answer, so here goes.

I was baselining the drivetrain fluids on my XK and noticed something strange. My drain pan has a fluid measurement on the side and I counted roughly 2.5 qts of fluid drained from my NV245 transfer case. OEM fill spec is 1.9 quarts and I managed to get both quart bottles of that Mopar liquid gold in without any seeping out (admittedly it is ever so slightly nose-down on my garage floor).

After searching for corroboration, it seems this happens to a lot of people. Some put in 2 quarts and it seeps out the fill hole, whereas others have to put in over 2 quarts of fluid to achieve seepage. I'm debating calling it good with putting in the amount the factory called for, but I'm curious what the rest of you think. Part of my moral dilemma is that I paid about $10/qt on Amazon and if I want to buy a third, I have to cough up $21. :/

i just drained and filled mine. used a 2pt pitcher as a catch pan and the old fluid filled it up but did not overflow. i'd say 1.9qts worth :)

Hahah, it's absolutely bizarre to me how there's so much variation in what people are draining and filling these units with. I caved and went to the dealer and plopped down $15 for another quart (apparently it wasn't $21 after all). I'll make sure the Jeep is level and even if it was a few ounces shy, I'm going to fill until I get the seeping, if only for peace of mind. :) Doesn't pay to save $15 when you're talking about a $1,000 transfer case!

I have news for you - a new transfer case is more than $1000.00

Just doing a quick search - a rebuilt one is almost $1,600.00

Well a couple days ago I smelled, ever so slightly but still there, a rubberish burning smell coming from underneath the "3 Tons o' Fury." I had just changed my T-case fluids about 1000 miles or so ago. This is what just came out(in the white bowl.) Now I'm no expert, but this doesn't look good to me. But again, not really to sure. So I drained and filled with the NV 245 t-case fluid. Hopefully this will solve my issue, even though it was only for a couple drives then it just stopped smelling. It's been about 4 days with no smell but still. Anybody had any ideas or input? Btw, the capacity is 1.9qts...I just put 2 in with the idea that some would not make it in through the pump and tiny residual in the jugs.

I just realised how dark it looks in the photo, it's dark but not like black coffee like in the photo

DKloud2016 ......Do you know what fluid was in their before and how long it was in service? I've seen worse (darker) fluid if it has been there along time.

Did the fluid smell burned like the smell you witnessed? If so, I would recommend driving a 1000 miles and R & R the fluid once more.

Idk what was in it before, but it was always serviced at jeep dealer from original owner so I would imagine the correct fluids. I put in same mopar nv245 t-case fluid last time. Didn't smell burnt when drained..like I said I smelled the burning smell only a couple times then it stopped...I plan on checking it out in a few miles to see what she looks like.

I just changed mine over the weekend with Amsoil hydraulic fluid, it took all of 3 quarts on level ground, without a jack, and would just begin weeping from the fill port.
