So i recently bought a 07 commander, and was rim shopping. i went to jeep4x4center.com, and called about a set of black rock type 8 997's in the 17x8 size. i checked tire rack and found they said that rim wouldnt fit, so i asked the guy at morris 4x4 if they would, because tire rack said no. he assured me they would fit, so i bought them.

i get the rims, and the dealership was buying me a new set of tires, so i went to the local town fair tire they had a deal with to get the install done. they call me in, they found that the rims did indeed not fit, and were scraping the brake caliper, which they found out after rolling it ten feet off the lift. so we talked spacers. the guy at morris said the lowest he had was 1.25, which i dont need. i mean its an 8" wide tire, that would look ridiculous. so the TFT stacked 2 spacers on each wheel (6mm total spacer width).

now, after two balancing visits, my steering still shakes like a leaf if i take it over 45mph. i cant return the rims because morris has a policy that they're non returnable after tires have been mounted. do you think TFT bent the rims when they initially found the problem, or is the steering shake due to the stacked spacers?

I've never had to deal with this type of problem so i'm sort of at a loss for what to do from here.

I doubt it's a rim issue..... and I wouldn't drive it like that. Your best bet is a set of hubcentric 1/4" wheel spacers. I know one of the guys here got a set, but i dont recall where. He'll probably chime in.

I'd be taking that joker at morris 4x4 out back for a chat if he told me it would fit, then that i couldn't return after finding they don't.lol But yeah, a set of hebcentrics will work. I had them on my Expy for a long time, never had a problem.

so after a few phone calls, morris is accepting the return. I really don't want to have to mess around with hunting down spacers, so I think I'm going to switch styles and see if that doesn't solve the problem. its weird, original brake hardware and everything and 3 different styles didn't fit.

1.25inch spacers won't look rediculous at all I have 1 inch and it's just barely noticeable with stock tires and makes handling feel better too

As for rims you need to make sure your backspacing is correct. I'm not possitve but I think stock is 5.5? Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Q: What is the width and back spacing of the stock Commander wheels?

A: The stock wheel is a 17x7.5 and has 6" of back spacing.

I ended up switching to a different model with enough back spacing and it did the trick. since I'm still paying it off, I don't want to get too far into it yet with modding it; the steel rims are more of a theft deterrent than anything, since it came with chromed out 21's that scream drug dealer in my neighborhood.
