I have a Yakima Steelhead fork mount track for a rack system. Of course, it doesn't fit the stock cross bars that come with the Jeep Commander. So...I was told I could get some Yakima Mighty Mounts that fit almost any stock rack system. I bought some online and when I tried to install they were too small. Does anyone know if there are mounts that would fit the odd oval shape crossbars so I can still use my Yakima track? Or should I give up and go another way.
Also...as you probably know..the crossbar arcs across the top of the Commander which means by the time the crossbar gets to the drivers side it is at a substantial angle. I noticed that if I was able to get the mounts to work...it seems the bike would not be mounted straight up and down but maybe at a pretty good angle...has anyone noticed this and is there any issues with it?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I have a Yakima basket on my XK and the mounts fit well on cross bars.

I have the Yakima Mighty Mounts and they fit fine. On the side opposite where the wheel is for tightening the mounts be sure you put the lower bracket in the lowest setting in the top bracket. If you put the lower bracket in the top setting it will be too small for the factory cross bars.

Thank you for all the feedback.

I have attached images so you can see what my mounts look like. I think they are too small. The is some space where the mounts are not laying flush with the crossbars and this is not allowing a very secure grip to be made. Are you guys seeing this too on yours? It seems to me mine are to small. As you can see I am using the largest setting and the larger of the two mounts that the kit comes with. I believe the mount should span the entire width of the crossbar and mine obviously do not do this. I have also tried to tighten them down as far as I could and actually mounted my bike up and there is way too much movement and play for me to feel comfortable. I think I must have a size smaller than you guys. Look at my images and let me know what you think.

Thanks again for all your feedback.

Let me start by saying I'm not in possession of any Yakima product, just a gadgeteer.. From looking at the 3 pictures provided, where it me I would get another mount, OR, more likely, go to a hobby shop and pick up a small block of Balsa and some coarse sand paper. Since I am a long time Modeller, I know how to work Balsa, and it is an amazing wood. Next wrap the sand paper around the cross bar, and run the balsa block back and forth until you have the shape of the cross bar. Now take the block and using a pen mark the top part of the clamp. I think you can see where I am going with this.. you are creating a thin shim, slightly oversize it so that the balsa will provide enough wood to supply a tight fit. Once this has been accomplished the last step is to use Lacquer, or AeroGloss polybutylite (Model airplane dope), any color will do.. but I would thin it with some clear thinner. What this does to the balsa is soak into all the wood pores, and become very hard. Another option I have used is to mix epoxy and spread it over the newly created balsa piece. Either method will produce a very hard yet somewhat resilient piece.

OR, just go back to the store and buy the next bigger size...
