I bought my 2007 Overland from a dealer in OR, live in WA, and have shipped the truck to Hawai'i where I have a condo and spent a few months a year. Just to provide a touch of geographical context.
Said Jeep has an intermittent starting problem. Every other day or so it simply won't start. The dash lights come on and the starter clicks like it isn't getting enough current to engage, as if the battery is dead. When I return the key to the off position and remove it the dash lights stay on for a few moments, unlike when the Jeep starts without issue. In that case the dash lights go out immediately upon turning the ignition off and removing the key. After a few minutes, up to five, and repeated attempts the jeep starts normally and runs fine so the battery is not the problem.
My leading contender is the ignition switch and have a replacement on order. Thanks to the information I've found here I, perhaps foolishly, think I can install it myself.
However, there has alway been a bit of wiring interwoven with and sticking out from a vent in the driver side foot well, in the center console. I had the notion that that bit might be loosely connected, or spliced, and making a short that was robbing the starter of juice. So I took the port off and discovered that the wiring terminates in an unconnected harness as shown here

So now I'm wondering what in the world that is and what it's supposed to be plugged into? For whatever it's worth the Jeep starts and runs fine without it plugged in at all but maybe this is the source of my intermittent starting problem, instead of the ignition switch?
Any words of wisdom from the learned?
