The click and no start problem started in my Commander since a month ,, every time it happens I cycle the switch several times till it fires,,, until yesterday were it totally died and never started.

I read this thread and noticed most issues were due to the starter, so I decided to change it right a way without any diagnosis and went to the dealer and bought the starter ($84 only) and towed the commander to a near by garage and asked them to replace the starter right away .

When I went to collect the car ,,, WoW ,, I then realized how lazy and weak was the old starter ,, the new one fires very quickly and sounds exactly the same as it used to be when I bought it.

This thread helped me alot ,, thanks to you all

My starter died at 100k km's after owning it for less than a month. I was so angry looking at my baby on the top of a flat bed tow truck.

The starter issue is when it does not crank. You get one click thats it. If it is cranking but not starting I am thinking fuel issue but my proplem like these other guys was the starter.

does anyone have a part number for that wiring harness for 3.7L? Anyone know a good place to buy that part cheap?

Mine still only works intermittently. I have cleaned the and replaced the connector terminal (yellow wire from harness that connects to starter) and waterproofed and packed it with dielectric grease. BTW, if you are having trouble getting that connector to come off you need to press on the top of the connector near the end and it will come off. PITA tho.

I had the same problem with my 06 Hemi Commander. The first time this happened a year ago I replaced the battery. Since the battery was the original MOPAR battery I figured that it was time and to my joy that solved my problem. Well a couple of days ago the jeep would not start. All I would hear is a click sound when I turned my key. After turning the key several times the Jeep started and I was able to use my jeep the entire day. The next day I got the same click sound and the engine would not turn over. I check the battery and it was fully charged. After reading a lot of forms it seemed that the problem was most likely my starter. I pulled the starter, which was a pain, and took it to Autozone. They tested it and it passed. The lady working there said it was probably a grounding problem. I bought a wire brush and brushed everything (engine block, starter face, bolts, positive contacts) and put everything back together and now it starts perfectly. The positive contacts on the starter looked perfect and so maybe it really was a grounding problem. Anyway it was a cheap fix. Now I need to find the clips so that I can install the fender splash shield.

Thank goodness for these forums. I never would have figured this out without looking it up here. I would have started throwing all kinds of replacement parts on. I took the battery in first as it was having trouble cold cranking a few weeks ago. Tested "replace Battery" was a Mopar about 3 yrs old so I hoped for the best. The Jeep started 3 times throughout the day. next day, just a click. Pulled fender well out, wd40'd the connector and slid it on tighter, has been starting right up the past week, every time.
I just searched for the clips (rivets.) Can get 25 for what dealer wants for 1.

Thanks everyone!

You can get a box of 25 rivets at NAPA for $6.59 (Part Number: BK 7702871). You will also need a rivet tool. NAPA wants $20 for it but you can probably find one cheaper somewhere else.

2006 5.7 hemi. Had the same issue a few weeks ago. Would just get a single click when turning the key. I could finally get it to start with a jump so I thought the battery was dead. Replaced the battery and the next day had the same issue. I cleaned the battery terminals and checked all the grounds I could see and nothing seemed loose. I finally tore out the fender well and found that the main terminal connector on the starter was loose and the push on connector was fairly corroded. I decided to have the starter checked anyhow and it passed with flying colors. I ended up cleaning the main starter terminal and connector with a wire brush, lubing it with the electrical grease and put it back on. I decided to cut the small push pin wire connector off and took the plastic off the connector so I could clean it. I pried loose the crimp and removed the old wire. I re-crimped the connector on, lubed it up, reconnected it and the jeep now starts like it's brand new!!

Make it Happen

Everyone and anyone who is having issues with their Jeep NEEDS to file a complaint with the NHTSA! This is the only way this issue is going to be resolved. We can cry all we want on these forms, but with enough complaints a recall will be issued! I know it sucks because I have all these issues, but PLEASE FILE A COMPLAINT!

The last two posts appear to be a simple loose connection in the wiring harness ... easy fix is to just get the shop to replace the harness ... it's the one that runs from the battery down to the starter.

Another option is to flood the inside of the harness with an entire can of WD-40, while wiggling the harness to get the fluid into the bad connection (where ever it may be) ... I've done mine twice and it lasted for over 6 months each time.

It's been forever since I posted :)

We'll after three years of intermittent stating problems, it had deteriorated to the point I kept a broom stick in the jeep and had to push on the harness to start it up every time!

Finally it stopped starting altogether, after an hour with my friend Sarah helping we finally got it going, dropped it at the shop and they found the starter was all melted at the front .. a new starter and it's been fine for two months ... They took apart the harness and could not see any bad connectors

I have NOT had this problem, but if I did, after reading all these posts, I would:

Remove the starter, thoroughly clean all the electrical contacts on the starter, as well as the connectors on the cables/wires. Reinstall it all, then paint the electrical connector area with liquid electric tape or nail polish or rubber spray paint or just coat it with a thick coat of bulb/dielectric grease.

Of course NOT everyone has the mechanical inclination to remove and reinstall a starter, and again I have NOT had this problem, but from what I read that really seems to be the only problem, the connectors corrode and short out the starter, you just have to clean all the corrosion off and do something that is effective in preventing the corrosion from coming back.

I have had this problem a few times within the last week. Dropped the Jeep off at the dealer last night and they found a bad crimp on the line going to the starter. They removed the connector, repaired the line with a new connector and so far have not been able to reproduce it yet. They were able to reproduce it several times before replacing the connector and cleaning off any corrosion. Looking forward to getting it back tonight.

I have a 2006 commander with 74,000 miles on it just replaced the starter a year ago and is no doing exactly what you are describing the shop said it was the starter and it is a pain to do. You have to drop the front drive shaft and with that there still isnt much room to work.

please help, electrical issue?

ok, this is as close of a topic i could find on a short amount of time,,, I used 06 commander yesterday no problems, this morning i jumped in started engine to find that nothing was working on the instrument panel or electrical on dash including blower motor for defrost or ac, no radio, no windshield wipers etc. i made it to work and shut it off, went inside a few and went back out to check things out, now it wont start, it did start for a few sec a couple times, now nothing, when you turn key usually it cycles thru lights on dash, now you turn the key and it just flashes for a sec then there off, try to turn it over and nothing.. please help if possible..thanks im sorry if i done this wrong, first time on a forum.
