If you have to wire it in instead of plugging a connector in, why do they give you the seven pin harness on the back and hide the 4 pin from you?
Dunno why they don't give us the plug. why the heck would I want to rip apart my vehicle to wire it when it should have been there in the first place. One of the very few complaints I have about this vehicle.

there is another post on here about a sub harness you can get tha the controller plugs into.. mine is going on Thursday at the dealer.... there then will be a plug fo the controller to go into ...

It's just a plugin harness? Or would you be depending on some monkey at the dealership to also wire it in. I don't do any work on my Commander (save breaking things for my Cherokee and my pickup.

Commanders don't have one.

Yes, there is no plug.

Thanks to both of you for your help. Just joined the forum tonight and I was surprised at the quick response. Picked up the Commander last week which is my first Jeep in 20 years and I thought it would have the same plug for the brake controller as my last three Dodge trucks.

Thanks again,

Hooking up trailer brake controller

Hi,
Just got a new 07' Commander Overland, big discount. I have a question, I want to hookup my trailer barke controller but the book doesn't tell me anything about it. Is the Pig-tail installed already or does it have to be added?

There is no factory hook up for the brake controller.

A very good dealer I hope he's reading this

Will wonders never cease, I traded in a 07' Ram Diesel to get my 07' Jeep. The dealer knew I was selling my 5th Wheel but keeping my Cargo trailer. That has 4 wheel electric brakes, and that I need a car that had a brake hookup.
They didn't know that the commander didn't come with the brake wires. So at no charge to me they are installing them and the brake in the morning (Free).

The most common wiring for a brake controller is to run a blue wire all the way from the controller to the connector at the back. The output from the controller is a variable voltage that applies the electric brakes in proportional to the voltage. You can also adjust the voltage down to prevent the trailer brakes from grabbing. For instance when you have no load on the trailer. The usual method for getting a brake signal is with a pedal mounted actuator or from the brake light signal. You can also usually apply the trailer brake from the controller directly with a sliding switch. Some people use this to help control a swaying trailer. Sorry for a long winded post, but the brake wire is pretty simple.

You can purchase the Brake Controller Sub Harness by Mopar at this website http://www.leeparts.com/jeep_commander/accessories/towing/brake_controller_sub_harness.html
It would take about 45 minutes to installed. The instructions are easy to follow.

I just installed that sub harness today (got mine from justforjeeps.com for $27.00) and it was about an hour job including the soldering of the two connections. It is pretty straight forward. Now all I have to do is wait for my Tekonsha P-3 Controller to get here and I will be good to go.

Brake controller question.

Hello,
Has anyone had sucess in installing a tekonsha Brake controller in there Comander ?
I have installer a new Primus controller, everything works- Running Lights,Brake lights, turn signals, BUT.. the brakes to my trailer can only be applied manualy. ( via the slide bar )
The Jeep harness ( instructions ) said to splice into the brake switch cold side.( white witre red stripe ) which I can not find.
Plus there are 4 wires coming of the brake pedal switch. None are white with red stripe, I have ohm'd out each wire and can not locate a change in resistance or voltage change.
Any suggestions ?
