Bestbuy has it for the same price this week, how ever, I was about to get this unit, but while I was at the store I found out that you can ether play CDs, or use the nav, and that does not make muck sence to me, I just keep on using my Garmin C330.

 

Ok, that seems like a good unit for a fair price. What about a unit that you can play CD's while using navigation? I do long road trips very often and we enjoy listening to CD's. Anyone? Thanks again....

Doesn't make since to me either, I know several people here have it installed already, maybe one of them can address that issue.

You can listen to CDs and use Nav with the Pioneer AVIC Z1, not sure of the price tho. It also has a 10gig hard drive to store CDs also

Got this from the pioneer page. Still seems like a pain in the butt to do.

Is there any decent GPS unit for about 1k that would fit an 06 model with the basic radio (I know I have to update the bezel...

Look into the Eclipse 6620. I installed one in my 4Runner about a month ago and I love it. You can use the navigation and listen to CDs at the same time, as there are two disc slots. You can even watch DVDs if you want (just don't try that while driving!)

You can find this unit for less than $1K if you look hard enough. I paid $899 for mine from Cartronix.

 

I went with a Jensen VM9512 from Circuit City. The unit itself was $550 and the add-on GPS unit was $350. You can listen to music sources (radio, CD/DVD, Ipod, USB device, 2 Aux inputs or SD card) while using the NAV. The unit also has bluetooth and supports a back-up camera. I went with this unit because I had the standard radio and the dash bezel on the Commander would have had to be replaced for a unit like the Pioneer. I didn't want the extra cost at the time.

The NAV unit (Jensen NAV-101) uses a SD card (seperate from the main unit) for all the maps.

It's been working well for me. NAV works good and I really like the SD card slot it has for playing mp3's.

The AVIC-D3 would end up at $488 after rebate, I would be willing to remove the disc for that kind of money. If I only had my car....

 

Do any of these units would allow to "mirror" what's on their screen on a second monitor? I have an aftermarket DVD and monitor with a/v input on the back. I like the Eclipse because you don't ever have to take the navigation disc out, and it seems to have a video output. Would be nice for rear passangers to switch to video 2 on the monitor to see navigation on long trips...

Dual Play: When an optional rear seat monitor is used, you can provide rear seat entertainment separate from what's being heard or viewed by the front seat passengers. When Dual Play is turned on, you can select Disc (DVD, CD, MP3/WMA) or TV (Live TV broadcasts using an optional TV tuner). Rear seat audio is played through the monitor's built-in speaker or optional headphones.

 

My nav disc never leaves the deck since i have it hooked to a 30gb Ipod, i thought the disc thing was going to be agravating, but i have yet to have a problem with it..

with the avic you can add additional screens

and the interface it so much easier than the other units i tried out, also the ability to chance the button colors was a big plus for me.. check out my threads

Yes, the Eclipse units can put video out to two additional monitors. I don't have mine set up that way, but it is very easy to do. It's not just to "mirror" the head unit's display to the rear. You can actually allow the rear passengers to watch a DVD while the driver uses the navigation maps up front.

The Eclipse also has too many features to list, but the best thing about it is the actual navigation system. In my opinion, it is much better than any other system out there. The user interface is intuitive, the routing is excellent, and it is an overall excellent system that performs much better than any other navigation system I've used. BTW, Toyota and Lexus vehicles come with factory navigation systems made by Eclipse, so they've got to be good!

Just because a manufacture uses a product does not mean it is good. Some manufacturers make a lesser quality product for new car lines, take the commander premium speakers for example.

Not saying Eclipse isn't good, just saying that the fact that it comes in a new car does not mean anything IMHO.

That's true, but if you've ever used a factory navigation system in a Toyota or Lexus vehicle, you'd know what I mean. The only other factory system that comes close in the Honda/Acura navigation systems. They are both award-winning systems that have excellent functionality and are very intuitive to use.

 

Eclipse it is... I know I need the Bezel, but not sure what additional wiring/harness I need for it to fit. If I input what I have on crutchfield.com it says it is not compatible (OEM 6CD Changer).... I can pretend I have the OEM navigation, but then I don't want it to assume I have a different harness to what I really have... I guess I'll have to call them.

 

My Jensen unit has output for front and rear use. The NAV uses an SD card, so it doesn't interfere with CD/DVD use. According to the manual, the rear can play something different from the front. The remote has front/rear selection on it for controls as well so it can be used by passengers in the rear seat to control their monitors. I don't have any need at this time to have the rear feature switched on, so I haven't used it.

What model is your Jensen? You had it done at Circuit City?

 

I have the AVIC-D3 with a 6disc changer mounted under the passenger dash as well as an IPod direct connect and Sirius. It is a great setup. With all that I hardly listen to CDs. The D3 is easy to use and you can customize the colors to match the dash. It looks clean installed too. I got the whole setup with changer ipod cable and sirius module for about $1100 from Crutchfield a year ago. Now its cheaper. The D3 is all i need to get me anywhere.
