Broken bolt on heat shield / Exhaust Leak

Well just got my Commander back for dealership, I was hearing an exhaust leak. It ended up being the bolt that holds heat shield on had sheared off. (driver side bolt closest to fire wall) I cant see how that bolt broke like that through normal wear and tear. I'm kinda thinking that it was probably torked to tight during production. Any way, I'm back on the road again. It took them 2 days to get that bolt out!

Was the bolt broken off flush with the head? If so I had the same issue with that same bolt and my dad was able to get it out in less then a half hour.

rust/corrosion is my guess. My work truck just had the tail pipe fall off a couple days ago because the flange rusted off the back side of the muffler. The tail pipe and the muffler pipe are both fine but the flange was almost completely gone. Rust works in mysterious ways.

So did that fix the exhaust leak. You never really mentioned anything about it being fixed now.

So no more leak???

Sounds like a long way to get there, but I am glad the fix was discovered.

Yes, leak is repaired 15.00 for bolt and gasket and 500.00 for labor. It sounded like a sewing machine when engine was cold. Dont have much issue with rust here in North Texas also Commander is kept in conditioned garage.

A long way to get where?

Haha mine still sounds like a sewing maching. I thought it had fixed the issue at first but it didnt.

Yes, I replaced the gasket, all the studs/bolts that hold the manifold to the head, the nuts that hold on the heat shield to the manifold and the two bolts/nuts that connect the manifold to the exhaust.

Its hard to say. As soon as I started the XK it sounded the same and I could hear the exhaust leak. Then I let the vehicle warm up and drove it home and it seemed like it got quieter and that I couldnt hear the leak as loud. Then a few days passed and I could still hear the same leak as before. Who knows I give up. Im going to drive my XK till the wheels fall off!!!

Is the exhaust leak you guys are discussing a kind of put-put-puttering sound you hear especially on excelleration?

Also, is this common to both the 4.7 and 5.7 liter engines? I believe Ranger has the hemi while 07 has the 4.7.

:eek:rangehat:

Yeah pretty much.

Im not sure what engine Ranger6882 has.

Sorry.... My bad... Your signature says you have a Limited "with all options" so I guessed you must have the hemi since I believe that was an option on the Limiteds.

I wish I could say the same. I have given up on the exhaust leak.
