Back Up Camera With Aftermarket Stereo

I have a 2008 3.7 with the factory back up camera. I wanted to know if its possible to connect the factory back up camera to a after market head unit. Like a adapter from the factory wiring to composite video connector.

I've tackled a new head unit, overhead monitor, front and rear DVR and backup cameras lately also.

The short answer is that while you should theoretically be able to connect it directly, you are butting in with CANBUS, which can completely go to pieces if something is not connected the way that it expects.

This sounds like a bitter pill to swallow, but trust me here. You will have much fewer headaches and save ten tonnes of time if, rather than haranguing over wiring diagrams and testing leads, you just cowboy up and run new wires through the liftgate and interior trim to your new head unit. You will only want to destroy your car if you try this any other way.

Short of having all of the resources and information of the manufacturer, yes. That is the quickest, easiest way to get what you want. In fact, even if you do have all the manuals and dealership info it will still be easier and faster to just run a new wire and use a new camera. I tried doing what you are suggesting and abandoned the idea quickly.

Sorry for not getting back to you but some 74 year old man drove straight into me while I was driving through my neighborhood. He admitted liability at the scene but I was still pretty pissed. I've had that Commander less then a month and have already put a lot of time and money into it. Only had 124k on it and still felt and looked like a new car. Now almost 2 months later of the car sitting at the shop there's talk about it being total loss. And on a side note I never got the time to take pics of the after market back up camera or new aftermarket amp I installed.

Oh wow, I'm really sorry to hear that.

I saw your pic....that's sad.

There aren't enough XK's around in good condition anymore, that we can afford for things like this to happen.

I had a similar situation when I was broad-sided in my '08 WK by some fool who ran a red light; My WK was totaled.

I know what a sickening feeling that is, so, I'm sorry.

The upside for me is, that sad chain of events is what led me to buy my XK 6 years ago.

That's a confusing pair of photos... hard to tell how the accident happened, I guess he just pulled up behind you afterwards. It doesn't look so bad on the outside, seems a shame to send it to the junkyard. Hope they can get it patched up, he's got to be crying more for his car though, looks like an accordion.

Those are some noice wheels btw.
